Winner’s bag: Gary Woodland’s equipment at the U.S. Open
Gary Woodland held off a hard-charging Brooks Koepka to win his first major championships at the U.S. Open. Woodland had four different equipment brands in the bag (Ping, Wilson, TaylorMade and Titleist), but the victory will go down as a major win for Wilson Golf, which inked Woodland to a staff deal back in January.
Not only did Woodland keep Wilson’s iron streak alive — Wilson irons have been used in at least one major win in every decade since the 1920s — he became the company’s first staffer since Padraig Harrington, in 2008, to claim a major.
When Woodland’s contract with Under Armour expired at the end of last year — he did not have an equipment contract at the time — Wilson approached him to see if the two sides could come to some sort of an agreement.
“For us, we want players that want to be a part of what we do,” said Wilson Golf president Tim Clarke. “Gary expressed his interest and excitement in the chance to work with us, and that told us it would be a good fit. All of this is an evolution for Wilson. We’re now attractive to some of the elite players in the world.”
While Woodland is under contract with Wilson, he used Ping’s G410 woods, TaylorMade’s Milled Grind Hi-Toe wedgee and a mix of Titleist products without compensation. Woodland switched to Titleist’s Pro V1 this year at the Wells Fargo Championship and finished T-8 at the PGA Championship — his second start with the ball.
