Quite possibly the most in-form player in the field at TPC Sawgrass, Rory McIlroy backed up five consecutive top-six finishes with a win at the Players Championship. The victory came with 14 TaylorMade clubs in the bag, including a 9-degree M5 driver that played an integral role down the stretch on Sunday afternoon.
Coming off a bogey on the 14th that dropped him one back of Jim Furyk, McIlroy birdied the next two holes to regain sole possession of the lead. McIlroy’s 347-yard drive on the par-5 16th left him with just 174 yards for his second shot that touched down inside 20 feet from the hole. He followed up the aggressive drive on 16 with another perfect tee shot on the last that hugged the left side of the fairway, setting up an approach from just 154 yards.
“I hit drivers on holes today that I would never have hit driver the last few years,” McIlroy said. “So just to be a little more aggressive, get a shorter club in your hand, and even when you are aggressive and you miss, it’s a touch easier to get yourself back into position.”
