Japan’s Miyu Yamashita has her first major title after holding off crowd-favorite Charley Hull to win the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl. Her two-under 70 in high winds Sunday was good enough for a two-shot win over Hull fellow Japanese pro Minami Katsu.
Yamashita’s win continues what’s been a dominant year for both her main sponsor, Cleveland/Srixon and her putter, the TaylorMade Spider.
While ranking just 138th in distance this week in Wales at just under 210 yards off the tee, Yamashita was one of the most accurate players in the field, ranking T4 in GIR and T7 in fairways.
With low clubhead speed, it should come as no surprise that Yamashita plays relatively soft profiled shafts, even by LPGA standards, using Fujikura’s SR flex in her woods and Dynamic Gold 85 R300s in her irons.
Meanwhile, the TaylorMade spider has dominated professional golf with 25 wins on the PGA Tour since January 2024.
