It was an offseason of change for Max Homa who showed up for the PGA Tour’s first event at Kapalua with a new swing coach (John Scott Rattan), new clothes (lululemon), a fill-in caddie and — perhaps most notably — new golf clubs.
Starting the new year, Homa signed a multi-year deal with Cobra Puma Golf to play the company’s clubs and wear Puma golf shoes. It was by far the loudest announcement of any equipment change by any player this offseason, especially considering Homa had played Titleist dating back to his amateur days.
Homa finished at 19 under last week at the Sentry, which was only good for a T26 finish in the birdie fest at Kapalua. But on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun both think there was a lot to like about how Homa played with the new year.
“You have to be stoked with the fact that you played really, really well,” Maroun said of Homa’s week. “You could trust in the irons that you’ve been testing and the woods that you’ve been testing. I think he put the wedges in play as well.”
The only holdovers from last year’s bag from Homa include his Scotty Cameron T5.5 prototype mallet and the Titleist Pro V1x golf ball. The Cobra clubs in his bag include the company’s new DS-ADAPT LS driver and a prototype set of 3D-printed irons.
He also immediately became the face of Cobra’s Tour staff with Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland likely no longer in their primes while Lexi Thompson is stepping back from regular LPGA competition.
“Cobra needs someone to kind of come out and do something really, really good for them, too,” Maroun said. “They’ve had a really cool story over the last few years, but they just haven’t had the pro presence to really kick it into gear once they lost Bryson [DeChambeau].”
Added McCormack: “Having Max on staff now, there’s a young player that gets the social media component, mixing it up with people, has the personality and I think, yeah, great addition.”
