Titleist unveils U-Series utility irons for golfers who need long-iron help

The T-MB utility irons were so popular that Titleist started selling them as full sets with numerous players, including a lot of Tour pros, swearing by the combination of distance, accuracy, and easy launch they provided. But technology marches on and the new U-Series Utilities ($250 each), though not available in full sets, does come in two models: the more compact U-500 and the wider-soled U-510.

Both new models feature similar technologies including high density tungsten weighting (98g on average in the U-500, 95g in the U-510) for a lower CG and easier launch and stability, and very thin SUP-10 L-Face inserts for increased ball speed and distance. The real differences between two new models are the shape, sole width, degree of offset, and what type of player they will appeal to. According to Josh Talge, VP Titleist golf clubs, both are definitely aimed at those who need help at the long end of the set.

“They want to be able to launch it higher and farther, they want to be able to shape shots, they want to be able to land it close to the hole – they just want to do it with an iron in their hands,” comments Talge. “Everything that went into U-500 and U-510 was geared towards giving these golfers the performance, look and feel they’ve always hoped for in a long iron, and maybe didn’t think was possible.”

Specifically the more compact and less offset U-500 is aimed at shot makers who demand versatility and control from a utility iron. In contrast, the U-510 provides more wood-like performance with easier launch and a bit more distance as the wider sole and larger clubhead allow for a deeper CG location than that of in the U-500.

The U-500 will be available in 17, 20, and 23-degree options while the U-510 will come in 16, 18, 20, and 22-degrees. Both models will come stock with HZRDUS Smoke Black 90 graphite shafts with a number of no upcharge custom shafts also available. Expect to see a load of players like Jimmy Walker, Jordan Spieth, and Adam Scott gaming the new U-Series utilities this week at Royal Portrush.

U-Series Utility Irons will be at retail on August 30th and available for trial and fittings beginning August 8th.
