I recently got a chance to test them at the Ping Proving Grounds, and it didn’t take long to realize these are something different. As someone who’s loved the i230s and spent plenty of rounds gaming the i210s, I didn’t think there was that much room for improvement… but I was wrong.
With my very first swing, I immediately saw (and felt) the difference. The i240 launched higher, spun more, felt smoother, and sounded crisper than the i230. And I REALLY liked my i230s. But the i240 gave me that rare “okay, I’m ready to put these in the bag right now” kind of moment. That doesn’t happen often.

One of the things I love most about working with Ping is getting to test and fit clubs where the magic happens, at the Ping Proving Grounds in Phoenix. It’s not just a test facility; it’s a golf nerd’s dream. You’re hitting shots with the latest gear on real turf, side by side with the clubs you already trust. You’re working with fitters who helped develop the product and understand it on a different level. Every fitting I’ve done there feels like a masterclass.
For this test, I brought my gamer i230s to compare directly against the new i240s. It didn’t take more than a couple swings to see that Ping had found a new gear for the beloved i-series. Higher launch. More spin. Better sound. Tighter dispersion. And most importantly, more consistency across the board. That’s the kind of performance difference you can feel and fit around. When the data backs up what your hands are telling you, that’s when you know a club is special.
That’s what makes this job fun. When I see something like the i240 that I know will help a lot of different players, whether they’re coming from i210s, i230s, or even a compact blade, it makes me excited to get this iron in front of more golfers.

At address, the i240 instantly reminded me of the i210s, a longtime favorite of Ping staffer Viktor Hovland and Ping staff pros alike. The top line is clean and compact, the offset is minimal, and the overall shaping is classic Ping players’ iron. But there’s a modern edge too. It feels like the i210 and Blueprint S had a baby.
There’s visible technology in the cavity, but it doesn’t distract. Instead, it gives the club a quiet confidence. The sleek Hydropearl 2.0 finish and clean lines elevate the look without overcomplicating anything.
Under the hood: What makes the i240 tick?
Ping calls this a true cavity-back player’s iron, and they nailed that balance between precision and forgiveness. The badge inside the cavity is lighter than the i230 by 8.5 grams, which allowed Ping’s engineers to shift weight and reposition the CG lower in the head. That’s a big reason why I saw higher launch and more consistent spin numbers.
Even as a lower-launching, lower-spinning, single-digit player, I was surprised how playable the new i240s were. Also impressive: They never felt like they were “helping” too much. The irons still let me shape shots and control trajectories, but on mishits, the forgiveness was instantly noticeable.
One thing I kept coming back to was the consistency in ball speed and downrange dispersion compared to my i230s. That’s where this iron really sets itself apart. Yes, it’s more forgiving, but the shot-to-shot consistency is what builds confidence to give it a little extra when you need to.
And turf interaction? Way better than I expected. Smoother, cleaner, and less “grabby” than the i230. That redesigned sole with a rounded lead edge and plenty of playable bounce just glides through the turf.
Built with the best in mind
Ping worked closely with their Tour staff to dial this one in. They updated the face with wider, fewer grooves to give better players more spin off the fairway, something Tour players specifically asked for. I’m not complaining either. More spin? Yes, please.
That collaboration is paying off. More i240 sets are showing up in professional bags every week, which speaks volumes. It’s a player’s iron that doesn’t sacrifice forgiveness. And for those of us who still want control and workability without giving up forgiveness and launch? It’s a dream combination.
Who it’s for
If you’ve been playing the i210 or i230, this is the natural evolution in your Ping journey, and a major upgrade. Whether you’re a single-digit handicapper or a consistent ball striker looking for a little more help and a lot more consistency, the i240 should be on your radar.
They’re also ideal for the player who loves the look and feel of a blade but appreciates the added “help” of perimeter weighting and a bit more forgiveness on off-center hits. That’s exactly where I saw new value. As someone who naturally launches it low and spins it low, I was really impressed with how the i240 gave me height and spin without sacrificing ball speed or feel. Usually, to get that kind of help, you have to give something up (looks, workability, or consistency). Not here. The i240 kept my ball speeds incredibly consistent across the face and gave me tighter downrange dispersion than I see with my i230s.
That’s what makes me excited to work with the i240 as a fitter. This is a rare iron that can fit into a wide range of bags. A strong ball striker will appreciate the feel, precision, and turf interaction. But a player who’s just a bit inconsistent or needs help with launch won’t feel like they’re overmatched or giving up forgiveness. It’s a versatile tool, and when you’re fitting golfers of all skill levels, that versatility is gold.
Final thoughts
Ping set out to make a player iron with game-improvement forgiveness, and they absolutely nailed it. The i240 is the best-feeling iron I’ve hit from Ping. The look, the sound, the feel, the performance — it checks all of my “must have” boxes as a gear nerd.
If you’re on the fence, go hit them. I’m betting you’ll have the same reaction I did after my first swing: “Let’s go ahead and build a set.”
