There’s no question that, for golfers hoping to improve their games, getting a custom club-fitting is basically a non-negotiable. But many players — especially mid- to high-handicappers — have the misguided belief that they need to reach a certain level of competence before a custom club-fitting would benefit them. And that’s just not true!
A proper club-fitting will meet you exactly where you are, minimizing your deficiencies for maximum efficiency — and that goes for players of every ability level. It’s also something that GOLF Director of Equipment Johnny Wunder experienced first-hand during a recent visit to the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, Calif. Wunder is a talented player with a scratch handicap, but as a father of two with a demanding travel schedule, his practice and playing time is limited.
“I typically don’t like to be swinging it my best,” Wunder said of his club-testing preference. “I want to find out if an iron can help me at my worst, because at this point in my life, most of the time, I’m not hitting it awesome. So I want to find out if these things can do the trick when I am not awesome.”
What Wunder discovered at Titleist was that he could get fit into a set with built-in efficiency and trust even when his ball-striking wasn’t his best, thanks to Titleist’s T100 and T150 models.
“What Titleist does really, really well, and this where they kind of dominate, is they really, really excel in the nuance,” Wunder said. “And you’ve got to remember, Titleist bases everything off of their fitting system, which is the 3 Ds: distance, dispersion, and descent angle.
“They fit for dispersion, not east to west, because they can fix that pretty quickly, but they want to ensure that you’re hitting the same peak height with every club.
“They want to make sure that the spin is there for control, and they want to make sure that your north-south dispersion is tight, typically getting pin high as much as possible because that’s how you shoot lower scores.
“This is all built around precision, getting to the pin as quickly as possible and shooting a low score, and that’s why the Titleist thing for me at this point in my life is extremely attractive.”
To zero in on Wunder’s ideal configuration, fitter Lucas Bro identified Wunder’s peak height with his 7-iron — even incorporating mishits — which helped everything else fall into place.
