Hideki Matsuyama held off Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship by two shots. The trip to the winner’s circle came with a new Scotty Cameron Craftsman Squareback Tour Prototype that bumped his “ace” — better known as a Cameron Newport 2 GSS — from the bag for the opening event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Matsuyama led the field in SG: Putting (plus-8.201) at TPC Southwind with backup wand that finally received a chance to usurp the gamer. It earned a longer leash after helping Matsuyama earn the win.
“I did put a new putter in the bag, and it’s been behaving very well,” Matsuyama said after the third round. “I’ve had the putter for a while, and I thought, well, it might be a good week to debut that putter.”
