Return of the Mock: Why Tiger Woods is rebooting his most iconic look ever at this year’s Masters

Things were plenty different in the spring of 2005. George W. Bush was just beginning his second term as president. Tom Brady had just finished off his third Super Bowl. “Wedding Crashers” would be the year’s top-grossing comedy. And Tiger Woods won the Masters wearing a mock turtleneck.

What’s old is new again at this year’s Masters. Woods and Nike released his looks for the week, and they’re featuring four TW Vapor Mock polos. Black on Thursday. Subtle green-grey and white stripes on Friday. Purple and white striping Saturday. And pure blood-red on Sunday. You’ll remember the look from the ’05 Masters trophy ceremony, when Phil Mickelson slipped the green jacket over that mock collar.

You can see Woods’s 2019 wardrobe below. In addition to the shirts, he’ll be sporting his Nike TW pants, his TW Aerobill Classic 99 and Nike Aerobill Classic 99 hats, and Nike Air Zoom TW71 shoes.

Nike said in a release its designers had been “inspired by classic looks in golf” in putting together this year’s line. Their roster of Masters golfers includes Woods, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Jason Day and defending champion Patrick Reed.

In addition to its traditional Nike apparel scripting, Jordan brands is unveiling a new shoe for the event, the Jordan XI, which is part of the “Snake Pack” shoe release paying homage to Augusta National. And maybe we’ll see some of that ’05 magic back again at this year’s event.
