The FedEx Cup winner’s hat logo could be worth a lot to bettors

The winner of this season’s FedEx Cup Playoffs is going to pocket a cool $15 million at the conclusion of the Tour Championship. Depending on sponsorship visibility during the telecast, that number could skyrocket for the winner, particularly if he has a sponsor for the front of his hat.

It’s common knowledge that front of the hat is the most coveted piece of real estate on a player. It also happens to be the most expensive and can range anywhere from $250,000 or more, depending on the player’s resume and whether the hat is part of a larger endorsement agreement.

“The front of the hat is your No. 1 real estate,” a top sports agent told GOLF.com last year. “On the high end, this deal generally includes other inventory—bag, equipment—as well. If you’re a Top 30 player, you’re definitely making seven figures on this. For a Top 10 guy, you’re looking north of $3 million and getting close to eight figures for the most marketable players in the world.”

With so much money up for grabs next week in Atlanta, sportsbooks are getting a bit creative with the prop bets. According to MySportsBook.com, you can actually take a stab at the primary logo on the front of the FedEx Cup winner’s lid.

At the moment, Nike is the favorite at even money (1/1) with golf equipment brands (8/5), clothing and footwear brands (11/1) and financial service companies (29/1) falling in behind.

The top 3 in the current FedEx Cup standings (Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy) entering the BMW Championship are all Nike apparel staffers, so it’s easy to see why the Swoosh is the betting favorite. That being said, tabbing a player with an equipment brand on his hat isn’t such a bad idea, as many players — including six of the top 10 in the standings — have club deals that also include the hat.
