Dia de los Muertos — or “Day of the Dead” in Spanish — is a Mexican holiday celebrated on Nov. 1-2. Ornate and colorful “sugar skulls” are used as ornamental gifts, which many people assume to be related in some way to Halloween. The celebration of Dia de los Muertos is in fact very different, though it falls on the calendar in nearly the same time frame.
Dia de los Muertos celebrations are intended to welcome departed souls back to earth for a brief visit. “Ofrendas,” or altars, are decorated with flowers, photos, mementos, candles, foods and beverages. The immediately recognizable sugar skulls are, in contrast with ghoulish and often frightening Halloween skulls, meant to represent and remember lost loved ones.
