If you find that your 3- and 5-woods are difficult to hit and you’re looking to optimize your bag at the top of your set, high-lofted fairway woods can be an excellent solution.
As GOLF’s director of equipment Johnny Wunder reported from this year’s Masters, 9-woods have become an increasingly popular choice at the Tour level, with players like Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson and Tommy Fleetwood adding the club to their bags. Why? At Augusta National, the players needed a club that not only traveled far, but launched high enough to land softly. The same benefit applies to weekend golfers, too.
With lofts that are generally around 24 degrees, 9-woods can fill an important distance gap at the top of your bag, making them useful on par 4s and 5s, and even long par 3s too. If you have a flat or sweepy swing, you may find that fairway woods are easier to hit than long irons, helping you to attack holes and required carries with confidence. The popular Callaway Paradym fairway wood even has a 27-degree loft (11-wood), enabling you to fully stock your bag with fairway woods.
