Tommy Fleetwood has one of the more unique golf bags on the PGA Tour, and it’s perhaps most jarring when you see how many headcovers he has.
While there is certainly no standard setup for a PGA Tour pro these days, the vast majority of pros start with a driver and then their longest fairway wood — 3-wood in most cases. Then there will be either another fairway wood, a 3-hybrid or a long iron before moving into the iron set.
But Fleetwood takes it a step further. Not only does Fleetwood play a mini driver instead of a 3-wood, but he also uses a club that was previously only thought of for weekend hackers.
At the Players Championship in 2023, Fleetwood replaced his 4-iron with a 9-wood, and it’s been a mainstay in his bag pretty much ever since.
“It’s like hitting a wedge onto the green; it goes up and drops straight down,” Fleetwood told GolfWRX that year. “It’s not a club you’re going to drill and get more out of it, it’s just going to go up in the air and come straight down.”
Occasionally, like in windy conditions at the Open Championship, Fleetwood will put a TaylorMade P770 4-iron in the bag in place of his Qi10 9-wood, but for the most part, it’s a part of the regular bag, like it was this weekend when he earned his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship.
Where the 4-iron will give him a shot that flies 226 yards at 4400 spin, Fleetwood can easily carry 232 and hit the upper 4000s in spin with the 9-wood and worry less about mishits.
Fleetwood’s idea has caught on all over the Tour, with more and more pros eschewing difficult-to-hit 3- and 4-irons for more forgiving 7- and 9-woods.
So the question is, if some of the best in the world, including the newly crowned FedEx Cup champion, are opting for more forgiveness and peak height by playing a 9-wood, why do you still have a 4-iron in the bag?
While Fleetwood’s specific Qi10 9-wood was a 2024 model that’s no longer made, there are still plenty of other options to add that forgiveness and peak height to your bag.
