Min Woo Lee’s insane power was on display this week at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. One might even say, he was cooking.
In notching his first PGA Tour win, the Aussie averaged more than 317 yards on all of his drives this week at Memorial Park Golf Course and averaged more than 190 mph ball speed with his driver. That was on a wet golf course too.
Lee also put up the impressive distance numbers after making a subtle tweak to the setup of his Callaway Elyte Triple Diamond driver this week. He actually exchanged his 9.0+ loft head for an 8.5˚ one.
“He worked with his coach, Ritchie Smith, last week and they wanted to shallow him out with the driver,” Callaway Tour Content Manager Johnny Thompson told GOLF. “As he shallowed out, he needed less loft because of added launch/spin from being less down on it.”
Callaway Tour Performance Rep Kellen Watson, who works directly with Lee and Smith on Lee’s setup, mentioned that Lee’s angle of attack didn’t necessarily change, but other factors necessitated the slight drop in loft so he could get into a better pattern with his swing.
In other words, Watson and Smith dropped the loft on his driver to try to get him to swing differently and it worked.
“It was more of trying to achieve a 30-meter apex with almost every club and maintaining path and face angles,” Watson said. “His AoA didn’t differ much, but the pattern of finish was changed, influencing a higher apex. The lofting down of the driver was to instinctually mislead him, creating a shallower attack and higher finish.”

Lee’s setup aside from the loft change remained the same as it has for the last few years, despite changing head models. His Elyte Triple Diamond 8.5˚ has a 57˚lie angle, weighs 197g and has the adjustable cog setting to N/S. Lee is a longtime user of the original Fujikura Ventus Blue 6-X shaft at 45″ to the end of the grip, tipped 1″, which results in a D3 swingweight.
