Want driver consistency? You need to test your gear correctly

All-world drivers like Dustin Johnson have a bevy of resources at their disposal when it comes to conducting driver and shaft testing. While you may lack the access to uber-knowledgeable Tour reps and high-tech swing analyzers that DJ enjoys, there are a few ways to feel like a pro when it comes to testing shafts.

1. Find a launch monitor.

It’s imperative to see performance numbers beyond simply how the ball looks in the air. Visiting a high-end fitter like True Spec Golf is a good way to gain access to the necessary data. The key values: ball speed, launch and spin rate. Of the three, ball speed is the best indicator of the potential of the club and can give you a good idea if a shaft is right for your swing.

2. Prioritize shot dispersion.

Hitting it 320 yards is fun, but gaming a driver that consistently finds the fairway will lead to lower scores.

3. Keep the focus on you.

Just because a Tour player launches the ball at 12 degrees with 2,200 rpm of spin, that doesn’t mean it’s optimal for all players. Based on ball speed, a slower swing might benefit from a higher launch and more spin to improve carry. In other words, don’t fixate on DJ’s numbers. Go get your own.
