Course Overview
Northern Michigan is teeming with underrated courses. Near the top of the list: Stoatin Brae. The course’s name is Gaelic for “Grand Hill,” an appropriate moniker given the course sits on one of the highest points in the Kalamazoo River Valley. Built by four associates from Tom Doak’s Renaissance Golf Design — the same team responsible for courses like Barnbougle Dunes, Tara Iti and Pacific Dunes — the talented group converted a meager 130 acres of mostly gently rolling pasture into an efficient, walkable and thrilling layout. When Stoatin Brae opened in 2017, locals quickly realized that the course’s primary defense was not trees or water but rather wind.
