Course Overview

Site of three U.S. Opens and a quintet of PGA Championships, this Depression-era Perry Maxwell design features holes that gracefully flow across a plot of undulating ground perfectly suited for golf. For decades, the land was smothered underneath a canopy of trees but Keith Foster and then Gil Hanse have opened up the property for all to admire. Gone too are the clean-edged bunkers that never looked at home on a Maxwell design. Raves all around for how this course has evolved this century, as demonstrated by the exciting 2022 PGA Championship won by Justin Thomas.

3 things to know

  • Hole everyone talks about

No. 18, par 4, 491 yards: A beastly finisher, a creek crosses the fairway of this dogleg-right hole. After you turn the corner, your march up the fairway is rewarded, as you’re treated to a beautiful view of a green framed by treacherous bunkers with the stately clubhouse behind it.
  • Best non-golf amenity

Southern Hills’ signature drink, the Club Special, features a mix of vodka, rum, sweet and sour and Sierra Mist — a perfect post-round refresher.
  • Insider tip

Make sure to carve out a few minutes to enjoy Southern Hills’ “History Hall,” where you can view an assortment of memorabilia from the major professional and amateur championships the club has hosted over the years.
