Friday at the Open Championship was brutal at Royal Troon as the links course showed its teeth. High winds wreaked havoc on the field and scores ballooned on cut day.
Shane Lowry currently holds the 36-hole lead at seven under (thanks in part to playing on the correct side of the draw), but most of the field didn’t have the same success as the Irishman. At the halfway point of the championship, just 10 players remain in red figures.
Friday also means its cut day — and plenty of big names are headed home early. Here’s how the cut broke down at Royal Troon.
How does the Open Championship cut work?
A total of 157 players teed off at this year’s Open Championship, but roughly half of them won’t be around to play the weekend. At the conclusion of the second round, the top 70 players plus ties make the cut. The remainder of the field headed home early. The cut-line rules at the Open Championship are the same as the PGA Championship, and slightly more lenient than those at the U.S. Open (top 60 and ties) and the Masters (top 50 and ties).
What is the projected Open Championship cut line?
At the conclusion of play, the cut line came at six over.
Who’s in danger of missing the Open Championship cut?
The Open Championship will be without plenty of big names this weekend. Tiger Woods missed cut at the Open for the fifth time in his career after rounds of 79 and 77 left him at 14 over through two rounds. Cameron Smith, the 2022 Open champion, will also miss the weekend as he posted 12 over for two rounds. Others who missed the cut include Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau and Tommy Fleetwood. Check out below for a full list of notables on the cut line.
