New clubs debuting on the PGA Tour are always exciting and this past week at the Travelers Championship Callaway officially unveiled their newest line of Opus wedges. The lineup includes both a standard Opus model and an Opus Platinum, which from initial reports consists of a multilateral construction.
Although there is no news on the potential retail release and availability for consumers, that didn’t stop GOLF’s Jonathan Wall and Ryan Barath from discussing the development of the wedge on the latest episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped podcast.
“We’ve been watching the way they (Callaway) have been developing wedges for a long time and we’ve seen prototype wedges out on the PGA Tour for at least 18 months. We have seen different versions in Jon Rahm’s bag, prototypes in (Chris) Kirk’s bag, and other options on the Tour truck. What’s interesting is that when you just look at them (in a golf bag) they don’t look that much different from each other… but there have been big tweaks as far as shaping (behind the ball) and sole shaping,” Barath said.
Wall asked, “From seeing them in person, what things have you noticed with them?”
Barath added, “I think the transitional shape between the lofts … is something that [these wedges incorporate] because we see more players using specialty pitching wedges but then want to see the shape evolve. They have a very organic shape that is very pleasing to see behind the ball… and I think from a performance perspective they’re easy to align regardless of how the face is orientated.”
