Sure, having a ticket to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game must have been nice, but we think the way Neal Shipley, Jasper Stubbs and Cristo Lamprecht took in the game might have been cooler.
The three amateurs crowded around a small television in the top room of the Augusta National clubhouse to watch the game on Monday night of Masters week.
“That thing is slightly bigger than a computer monitor,” Shipley told GOLF Supar co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz on this week’s podcast. “That was a super fun night.”
As is tradition, amateurs competing in the Masters are inviting to stay in the Crow’s Nest during tournament week. These days, most choose only to stay for a night, but it’s an experience unlike any other.
It’s a small space but that adds to the charm.
“When one person wakes up in the crow’s nest, everybody wakes up,” the Masters Low Amateur said. “But you know, that’s it’s it’s actually it’s quite comfortable. It’s small, there’s twin beds.
“I was really comfortable out there and had a really good night with the guys.”
However, it’s definitely not appropriate accommodations for someone of the 6-foot-8 Lamprect’s stature. Pictures of the South African’s feet hanging off his bed and standing well above the shower head went viral during the week. He was believed to be the tallest Masters competitor ever.
“The shower situation is really tiny,” Shipley explained. “The space you have in your own bedroom, and it’s not even really a bedroom. It’s just kind of like a wooden, like, wooden partition. And there’s like probably about a foot space on the bottom. So that’s why you can hear everything from everyone.”
Despite the close quarters, Shipley loved his night up in the Crow’s Nest.
“It’s a really cool little area,” he said. “And to think about the history up there is awesome. Like the amount of guys have been up there. The names of golf, everyone.”
