the pga championship's wanamaker trophy

Someone will claim the Wanamaker Trophy — and a huge paycheck — come Sunday at Oak Hill Country Club.

This year’s PGA Championship winner will receive the biggest winner’s check in the tournament’s history, but let’s be honest, someone’s going to deserve it after coming out on top this week.

Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., has been a fair but brutal test. Chilly early morning temperatures have left golfers shivering and rain and wind wreaked havoc on the field on Saturday. Sunday is supposed to be the nicest day of the week, so getting to this point has all been worth it. (The money will be, too.)

The PGA of America increased its overall purse to $17.5 million for this year’s PGA Championship, with the winner taking home $3.15 million. The total purse is a $2.5 million increase from last year, and the winner’s check gets a bump from the $2.7 million Justin Thomas won in 2022.

The PGA Championship, the second major of 2023, boasts its big purse increase one month after we saw the same happen to the Masters, which paid out $18 million in prize money last month.

LIV Golf, the PGA Tour’s rival, offers $4 million to its tournament’s individual winners, and the PGA Tour’s designated events awards $3.6 million to winners.

Check out the complete payout breakdown for the 2023 PGA Championship below. Brooks Koepka enters the final day leading Corey Conners and Viktor Hovland by one.
