It’s hard to overstate just how important your driver is to your game. Good drives can set the tone for both a given hole and your entire round, instilling a sense of confidence and giving you the best chance of reaching the green from a good position.

That’s why it’s important to set yourself up for success from the very beginning, and that means making sure you use the optimal address position.

10 tips to actually hit your driver in play | How to break 80 in 2022
By: Dylan Dethier

As I watch golfers who struggle with hitting their driver proportionally as far as they do their other clubs, most of the time it’s because their ball position is incorrect. When the ball moves more forward, the shoulders should tilt back and away from the target.

For golfers who struggle with that, I recommend starting with your feet together with the club right in the middle of your feet. Then, baby step your forward foot, and widen and drop the back shoulder. That should pretty much guarantee perfect ball position with your driver, as well as the right shoulder tilt.

The reason for this is because when your shoulders are tilted back and away from the target, you’ll catch the ball on the upswing as opposed to the downswing.

Do this correctly, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the increase in distance. And as an added benefit, your tendency to slice the ball will dramatically decrease from this position too.
