The Adidas Stan Smith is arguably one of the most iconic sneakers ever. It started out as a tennis shoe worn by its namesake back in the early 70’s, but over the years it has completely transcended sport. The shoe’s become a streetwear style icon and wardrobe staple, and now it’s entering a new realm — golf!
Last night, Adidas released a teaser video for the new shoe with the man himself, Stan Smith, and defending Masters champ, Dustin Johnson, who will be wearing the shoe at Augusta this week.
Without straying from the beloved and iconic design, Adidas made a few updates to the classic style to make sure the it aligns with their mission to end plastic waste. The upper is made with their proprietary Primegreen material, which means it has a minimum of 50 percent recycled content.
The golf version of the Stan Smith features a rubber spikeless outsole with traction inspired by the shoe’s original sole design. The green color symbolizes the sustainability mission, but also celebrates the year’s first major championship. Subtle features like a removable white kiltie that houses a Trefoil logo ball marker add some golf-specific characteristics to differentiate this style from its original tennis counterpart. The photo of Stan Smith on the shoe’s tongue is also updated so he’s wearing a golf cap.
As it turns out, Stan Smith is quite an avid golfer himself. He plays a lot of rounds at Harbour Town Golf Links in his hometown of Hilton Head, S.C. where he’s taken his latest namesake kicks for a few test runs. He personally prefers the kiltie-on look and is excited to see the Adidas golfers rock his shoes at this week’s Masters Tournament.
The shoe will be available on adidas.com beginning Wednesday, April 7, but in the meantime, you can shop the new and improved Primegreen Stan Smith sneaker.
