The 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open kicks off Thursday, February 4, at TPC Scottsdale. Here’s what you need to know to watch the first round.
Previewing Waste Management Phoenix Open Round 1
Rory McIlroy is playing some of his best golf since this time last year as he gets ready for the first round at the Phoenix Open. While a T16 finish as last week’s Farmers Insurance Open was far from career-defining, he finished third the week prior at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and T5 in his previous start at the 2020 Masters in November.
McIlroy, currently ranked No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking, will get his tournament started on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. ET and will play alongside Xander Schauffele and Daniel Berger.
World No. 1 Dustin Johnson decided to skip the Phoenix Open in favor of the Saudi International, as did several other star Americans. But that doesn’t mean the Phoenix field is soft. Three of the Top 5 players in the world will tee it up: Jon Rahm (No. 2), Justin Thomas (No. 3) and Schauffele (No. 4).
Fans will be in attendance at TPC Scottsdale, but due to Covid-19 safety concerns, the total number of spectators will be dramatically fewer than the 100,000-200,000 ticket holders the tournament sees per round in a normal year. For those watching from home, below you will find everything you need to watch the first round on Thursday.
