Phil Mickelson is getting his year started right this week at the 2021 American Express in his home state of California. He’s also starting right where he left off in 2020, at least in terms of his way with words when the mics are hot.
The 50-year-old Tour veteran was taking part in an American Express charity competition prior to the tournament alongside Tony Finau, and PGA Tour Live cameras caught Finau hitting a tee shot as Phil watched. Finau, for those not in the know, is one of the longest drivers on Tour. Not only that, but many players agree that if he were to swing all out he would be the longest player on Tour.
Since it wasn’t an official round, Finau decided to do just that and swing all out: “I’ll just send it then,” he says, before launching a massive blast into the ether (and eventually, it appears, in the fairway).
Mickelson is a known admirer of “bombs,” and his reaction was good enough to steal the show.
“Huh, get some!,” Phil says as Finau’s ball sails through the blue California sky, “Oh my word!”
But his next line is pure Phil.
“You have never been so attractive as right now, Tony,” Phil says, causing everyone present to erupt in laughter.
Check out the moment for yourself below.
Finau responded to the video shared on the offical PGA Tour account, writing, “There’s only 1 Phil Mickelson.”
