Phil Mickelson, Jason Day charge into contention at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The 2020 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is already at the halfway point, and second-round charges from two of the game’s most popular players should add plenty of intrigue heading into the weekend.

Here’s everything you missed from Friday’s Round 2 action.

Phil Mickelson, Jason Day charge into contention

After firing respectable opening rounds of 68 and 67, respectively, defending champ Phil Mickelson and Jason Day went low on Friday to launch themselves into contention heading into the weekend.

Day had six birdies and an eagle at Pebble Beach en route to a round of eight-under-par 64. He’s currently in solo second at 12 under par overall, two shots behind tournament leader Nick Taylor.

Mickelson made seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys at MPCC to sign for a second round of seven-under-par 64. He’s in solo third and three shots behind Taylor’s lead.

Day hasn’t won on Tour since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship and has dropped to No. 46 in the world. Mickelson’s last win was this very tournament last year, but he too has struggled since, dropping all the way to No. 72 in the world golf ranking.

Nick Taylor hangs on to two-shot lead

Canadian pro Nick Taylor didn’t go quite as low as his opening round of 63 on Thursday, but he did follow up the sizzling performance with a six-under-par 66 at Pebble Beach on Friday.

The 31-year-old made seven birdies and only one bogey in the second round, bringing his two-day total to 14 under par, which leads the field by two shots.

Taylor is seeking his second career Tour victory this week, and his first win since the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Who else is in the hunt?

Chris Baker and Charl Schwartzel are four shots behind Taylor at 10 under par overall, while Scott Piercy and Dustin Johnson are five shots back at nine under par overall.

How did the rest of the big names play?

Matt Kuchar is currently T45 at three under par overall, Jordan Spieth is T66 at two under par overall, and Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell are one over par (T104) and two over par (T112), respectively.
