This simple, brilliant golf tee might literally never break

January 21, 2020

A person might ask three things of a golf tee. One, that it shall hold a ball. Two, that it won’t fly away and disappear. Three, that it won’t break in half. On Tuesday at Demo Day at the PGA Show, I think I found a tee that does all three.

This might not sound like much of a feat, for a golf tee to effectively serve as a golf tee. But think about the tees you’ve encountered in your life. Wooden tees snap in half. Plastic tees bend, and fly away, and then they don’t hold the ball. Those cylindrical rubbery range tees are never the right height — plus they just don’t feel like real tees.

Enter Titan Golf, who has made a tee that seems simple and obvious — yet I’ve never seen anything like it. Say you’re headed to the range to work on some drivers. Pick one of the three sizes of tee (2 1/4”, 2 3/4” or 3 1/4”) and pop it into the “base” that comes with it. Then, all you have to do is point the 90-degree opening in that base in the direction of your target and swing away.

Titan Tees

When you hit a ball, there are two specific benefits to the Titan tee. First, it will bend forward harmlessly, unbroken. (Seriously, if you’re hitting driver, the thing doesn’t break…) Second, it will give you some feedback about your swing path. If you’ve hit a slice, you might get some insight why after seeing the out-to-in swing path — because your tee will be pointing left of target, as you can see below.

If your club path goes straight through impact, your Titan will do the same.

It won’t give us world peace or even more distance with your driver, but that’s a useful tee! I’m not easily impressed by golf’s latest inventions, but if I were a driving range, I’d invest in these over buckets and buckets of tees that will snap. The least sexy product from Demo Day might be the best at simply doing its job.
