Remember Hosung Choi? He just won a tournament in Japan

Remember Hosung Choi? The affable South Korean with a truly unorthodox swing became an overnight sensation last June when he was in contention during the third round of the Korean Open. Observers couldn’t get enough of his entertaining follow-through, where he lifts his right foot off the ground and rotates it around his body. And that’s not all — Choi also showcases a visceral reaction to each shot, be it one of joy or anguish.

A fast-swelling fan base began a petition to get Choi a sponsor’s exemption into this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, but when that didn’t work out, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am stepped up. Choi made his U.S. Tour debut in February, and while he ended up missing the cut, he was also invited to play July’s John Deere Classic and Barracuda Championship, where he unfortunately also missed the cut.

All has been quiet on the Hosung Choi front since then … until now. Choi just won the Japan Golf Tour’s Heiwa PGM Championship with a four-round total of 14 under par.

Choi was T13 after an opening round of three under par, but climbed the leaderboard with each successive round. A second round of four under par brought him to seven under for the tournament, into a tie for third. By the end of the third round, Choi was 10 under par overall, and held a one-shot lead over Shugo Imahira. A final round of four under par sealed Choi’s victory by two shots over Imahira. Shaun Norris and Dylan Perry tied for third at 11 under overall.

The performance marks Choi’s first win of the season on the Japan Golf Tour.
