Oh, the irony! Jason Day wore a sweater vest right off Tiger’s back in Japan Skins victory

October 21, 2019

Not only did Jason Day come away with the pride of beating Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama in The Challenge: Japan Skins, he did it while wearing his competitor’s sweater vest.

Yes, you read that right. The Big Cat wore a navy blue Nike Tiger Woods collection sweater vest for the first third of the match before changing into a full-length sweater. Shortly after Tiger’s change, Day, who began the day in just a short-sleeve polo, donned the vest on the following hole — as well as during his champion’s photo-op on the 18th green.

The sweater vest swap became an entertaining storyline in what was meant to be a celebratory kick-off event to the PGA Tour’s first-ever tournament in Japan, this week’s Zozo Championship, and the social media reaction appeared to revel in the irony.

In a post-round interview with GolfTV’s Henni Zuel, Day credited his win to his decision to wear Tiger’s vest. “I think it was all in the vest,” he said with a laugh. “I stole Tiger’s vest today.”

Day, Woods, McIlroy and Matsuyama will be back in competitive action when the Zozo Championship begins on Wednesday night (ET).
