Tiger Woods’ son is as skilled a trash-talker as his dad, according to this Justin Thomas burn

Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters, of course, but Justin Thomas was in the mix coming down the stretch as well.

Thomas birdied 12 and 13 to sniff the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, but he bogeyed three of the last five — although he aced the 16th — and finished eight under overall, tied for 12th and five back of Woods.

“I was right there,” said Thomas, appearing on the most recent No Laying Up podcast. “I easily could have won this golf tournament.”

Thomas joined the NLU podcast to discuss his season, the 2018 Ryder Cup and more, but he also retold a great story from that aforementioned final day of the Masters that involved Woods and his son, Charlie. Thomas said once he finished he went into the Augusta National clubhouse and saw Woods’ mom, girlfriend Erica Herman, and Woods’ kids, Sam and Charlie, among others, in a small group watching the final round unfold on TV.

“I just went over to say hey to them and what’s up to Charlie, and I just kind of saw him and said, ‘What’s up dude?'” Thomas said. “And [Charlie] just looks at me and says, ‘Oh, hey, look, it’s the guy who can’t putt.'” Thomas laughed about the encounter with the 10-year-old.

“Charlie, his little boy, he’s amazing,” Thomas said. “The apple definitely doesn’t fall far from the tree there. He’s identical to Tiger and just such a little smart aleck.”

Although to be fair, Thomas did struggle on the greens last season. He finished 144th in Strokes Gained: Putting (-.186). On the podcast he described it as a “very, very bulky year with my putter.” He said when he lost some time with his wrist injury — he missed almost two months — he decided it was a good time to focus on his putting, but he said he thinks he putted too much and picked up bad habits.

“I was trying to become perfect and putting is so instinctive and you still have to be athletic and kind of feel it out,” he said. “I was trying to get too mechanical and really trying to get too perfect.”

Thomas had a strong end to his season, though. He didn’t finish worse than T12 in his last five starts and won the BMW Championship.

“It was a good year,” Thomas said, “but it definitely would have been a lot better.”
