Jordan Spieth misses secondary cut after third-round collapse at Wyndham

August 3, 2019

On Thursday, Jordan Spieth shot his lowest round of the season. On Friday, he backed it up with a 67 to find himself in contention. Saturday was a distinctly different day. Spieth struggled to a 77, the highest score by any player all week, and missed the secondary cut at the Wyndham Championship.

Spieth’s day got off to a rough start. His opening tee shot found a fairway bunker and he missed a three-footer for bogey, leading to a tap-in for double. He added another bogey at No. 7, making the turn at 3-over 38. Spieth blocked his tee shot out of bounds on No. 10, leading to another double. And another poor tee shot and a missed shortie at No. 13 added up to a final double.

In the end, it was a strange scorecard: 14 pars, one bogey and three double-bogeys in a 7-over 77. Spieth dropped 66 spots on the leaderboard to wind up T78. On the day, he hit just four fairways and lost 3.4 strokes to the field with his putter, better than just one other player on the day.

To Spieth’s credit, he faced the media after his third-round difficulties before signing a number of autographs. Golf Channel’s Will Gray reported that he put the onus on his golf swing. “I putted my ass off to be where I was through two rounds, and you can’t fix ball-striking in a day,” Spieth said.

Saturday marked just the fourth birdie-free round in Spieth’s career. His 2019 weekend struggles have been well-documented, but bear repeating:

1st round scoring average: 69.63 (18th)

2nd round scoring average: 68.47 (2nd)

3rd round scoring average: 70.80 (149th)

4th round scoring average: 73.00 (201st)

Unfortunately for Spieth, he won’t get a chance to work on that final-round scoring average this week.
