Sung Kang comes up big down the stretch to win AT&T Byron Nelson

May 12, 2019

A weather-delayed Saturday meant a ton of golf scheduled for Sunday at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Here’s what you missed at Trinity Forest in Dallas, Texas.

Who won: Sung Kang (four-under 67, 23 under overall)

How it happened: Matt Every led Sung Kang by one through nine holes when their third round was suspended due to weather on Saturday, but Kang made that up on Sunday morning. He opened the final round later on Sunday leading Every by three. Kang kept his lead until the par-3 12th, when he missed the green and made bogey and fell into a tie with Every at 21 under. They both birdied 14 to stay in the lead, but Kang birdied the 15th and Every bogeyed for a two-shot swing. Kang added another birdie on 16 and won by two. Every and Scott Piercy tied for 2nd at 21 under.

Why it matters: It’s Kang’s first victory in his 159th career PGA Tour start. The 31-year-old, ranked 138th in the world, lives just 30 minutes from Trinity Forest. It also gives Kang some positive publicity following his 2018 Quicken Loans National run-in with Joel Dahmen, in which Dahmen accused Kang of cheating when making a drop. (Kang was never penalized by an official and denied the accusation.)

Best shot when it mattered: Kang’s 23-foot birdie he rolled in on 15 was good for a two-shot swing, which gave him some valuable cushion for the final three holes.

Notables: Playing in the penultimate grouping, Brooks Koepka was in the mix late but stalled with pars on the final three holes. He shot 65 and finished 4th, but heads to Bethpage Black to defend his PGA Championship title coming off a strong week. Jordan Spieth shot an even-par 71 and tied for 29th.

Up next: The 101st PGA Championship, with its new May date, begins at Bethpage Black on Long Island on Thursday. Tiger Woods is making his first start since his Masters victory last month and is the betting favorite.
