Bubba Watson is one of the most colorful characters in the game, and often times the most candid. At thee Hero World Challenge late last year, I was lucky enough to catch up with Bubba for a brief but honest conversation about his struggles off the course, and the good times he’s had on it.
Bubba Watson on his favorite courses…
“My favorite golf courses are the courses with history. The ones that have a sense of tradition. The ones that honor the traditional values of golf.”
Bubba Watson on his swing…
“I don’t try to change my swing. I know it changes, but I’m not the one doing it. It’s just one of those natural things.”
Bubba Watson on his balancing golf and life…
“I’ve had mental issues. I’ve had physical issues. I’ve had a combination of both. For me, golf and life work together. Golf is a by-product of the stress and everything else going on outside the ropes. When I feel good off the course, I play better on it.”
Bubba Watson on his struggles off the course…
“In 2015 I had a lot of family stuff going on. They only let me in the field at the Hero World Challenge that year because Jason Day withdrew. Everything came together that week, and I was lucky I got to lift that super heavy trophy at the end.”
Bubba Watson on his health issues…
I was considering retirement at the time. I had lost 25 pounds, couldn’t play golf and sustain the energy. I had to rebuild my game and my physique. It took a ton of hard work and dedication, so to come back and win again is something I’m really proud of.
