‘It’s been 50 years on the road’: Broadcaster Johnny Miller mulling retirement

August 30, 2018

Famed Tour pro-turned-announcer Johnny Miller is considering stepping back from his duties, he announced at a promotional event. An AP news report quoted Miller’s comments from the site of the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif.

“It’s been 50 years on the road, and part of me is saying, ‘That’s enough,’” Miller said Tuesday. Miller will call the final three playoff events for NBC and then head to France for the Ryder Cup. Still, he isn’t ready to give up the gig entirely. “I haven’t gotten to that point yet. They’re still trying to convince me to keep going. So we’ll see. I usually listen to my gut, so to speak, and my wife. Right now, I am planning on scaling down even more. We’ll see what happens. Maybe I will say, ‘Hey, one more year.’”

Johnny Miller
Johnny Miller has been in the NBC broadcast booth since 1990.

Miller, 71, joined NBC in 1990 and has drawn praise (and ire) for his willingness to critique even the game’s top players. Before his time in the booth, Miller was a force on the PGA Tour, winning 25 times, including two majors. His final-round 63 at Oakmont in 1973 has long been considered among the best rounds in major championship history. Miller was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998.
