Brandt Snedeker withdraws from Northern Trust with back spasms

August 23, 2018

Brandt Snedeker has withdrawn from the first FedEx Cup playoff event, the Northern Trust, citing back spasms.

In a statement released by the PGA Tour, Snedeker explained that his back “seized up” on Wednesday, and he was unable to complete the pro-am. He’s hoping to play in next week’s Dell Technologies Championship, which is open to the top 100 players in the FedEx Cup rankings after this week.

After shooting a first-round 59 and later claiming his ninth career Tour win at the Wyndham Championship last week, Snedeker launched 50 spots up the rankings from No. 80 to No. 30. So even if he sits out this week, he’s still comfortably qualified for the next two playoff events.

A more pressing issue: the Ryder Cup. Snedeker is currently No. 37 on Team USA’s qualifying list, but given his recent good form, he’s hoping to be considered as a captain’s pick.

Snedeker was a member of the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cup teams, and has a 4-2-0 overall record.
