Chalk this one up in the Never-Before-Seen category. Mark James, while playing the famous 17th hole at St. Andrews during the first round of the Senior British Open on Thursday, hit a seagull with his tee shot in mid-air. The ball careening toward the Old Course Hotel and out of bounds. Remember this for when you think you’ve had an unlucky bounce on the course.
James was two over for his round and headed for the finish when that sneaky birdie kept him from making one. James was forced to re-tee on the difficult par 4, swallow that nasty medicine and move on. He’d end up making a triple-bogey 7, signing for a first round 77.
