In the prime of his career, Tiger Woods was the most guarded professional athlete in sports. Everyone wanted a piece of him, and nobody could truly get it. His interview cliches became famous — “Tiger-isms” — and many fans struggled to connect with the man who dominated the game.
But nowadays, things are quite different.
Tiger’s priorities have shifted. He’s a father now, and faced with the prospect of never playing professional golf again after an onslaught of injuries, he’s become more reflective as the years go on. He’s more candid in interviews, and never is that more apparent than in Tiger’s recent interview with Henni Zuel for GolfTV
It’s jam-packed full of good stuff, like this…
“To actually have won my first major championship, coming from behind, given my situation the last few years of what I’ve had to battle through, that now is the time I win by coming from behind?”
But it was this exchange that was best of all. Talking about his obstacles, and how his kids perceived them. Powerful stuff.
“No one is perfect, and everyone is dealt with cards in their life where they have obstacles they have to overcome, and some are different than others. And to fight, to get back up and know that this is all not done alone. I’ve had a fantastic group around me, and their love and support has helped. Having the kids and their love, because they never knew golf to be a good thing in my life. All they knew was that golf was this thing that brought an incredible amount of pain to their dad. And they don’t want to see their dad in pain. So to now see them see this side of it…that I had to battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”
It does feel good indeed.
