Michelle Wie undergoes hand surgery, will be out for the rest of the season

October 18, 2018

LPGA star Michelle Wie took to social media on Thursday to reveal that she will be out for the remainder of the season while she recovers from hand surgery.

In a lengthy Instagram post, which she also posted on Twitter, Wie revealed the extent of her injury.

“After countless MRI’s, X-rays, CT scans, and doctor consultations, I was diagnosed with having a small Avulsion Fracture, bone spurring, and nerve entrapment in my right hand,” Wie wrote.

“After 3 cortisone injections and some rest following the British Open, we were hoping it was going to be enough to grind through the rest of the season, but it just wasn’t enough to get me through. So I made the decision after Hana Bank to withdraw from the rest of the season, come back to the states, and get surgery to fix these issues.”

Wie went on to say that she’s looking forward to starting her rehab so she “can come back stronger and healthier than ever.”

Wie’s announcement ends what has been an up-and-down season for the 29 year old, who claimed her fifth LPGA victory in March at the HSBC Women’s World Championship.

Wie has only competed in three regular-season LPGA events since July. She missed the cut at the Scottish Open and withdrew from the Women’s British Open. After a lengthy break in August and September, she returned to play in the UL International Crown, where she debuted a new swing and helped Team USA finish second. At last week’s LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship in Korea, she finished 66th.

The LPGA Tour remains in Asia for the next four weeks before returning to the U.S. for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship in November.
