Francesco Molinari’s amazing Ryder Cup week ended on a perfect note

September 30, 2018

What a year 2018 was for Francesco Molinari. The Italian went toe-to-toe with Tiger Woods on Sunday at the British Open and prevailed to win his first major. Then, at the Ryder Cup, playing alongside Tommy Fleetwood, he squared off against Tiger Woods three more times and won them all en route to a perfect 5-0-0 week.

And best of all? He secured the winning point!

Coming into the 16th hole of his match with Phil Mickelson 3 up, Molinari hit his approach to the heart of the green. Mickelson followed by putting his in the water, and that was that. Mickelson conceded the match on the tee box, and the Ryder Cup was Europe’s once again.

It marks the end of a historically good week for Molinari. Here’s why:

  • He’s the first player in history to win a major and go 5-0-0 in a Ryder Cup in the same year.
  • He’s just the fourth player in Ryder Cup history to 5-0-0 in a Ryder Cuo (Larry Nelson in 1979; Arnold Palmer and Fardner Dickinson in 1967 were the others)
  • He’s the only European to ever go 5-0-0 in the Ryder Cup.

History made, on multiple fronts. And he will have earned his celebration tonight.
