Here’s how Tiger Woods can win the FedEx Cup

September 17, 2018

A year ago, Tiger Woods’s future as a professional golfer was in serious doubt.

Now? He’s 20th in the FedEx Cup standings and one of 30 players in the field for this week’s season finale, the Tour Championship at East Lake. He even has a chance — albeit a small one — of claiming the FedEx Cup title and $10 million bonus.

It won’t be easy, but if Woods wins the Tour Championship he’ll need a few more dominos to fall to give him his first FedEx Cup title since 2009.

Coupled with a Woods win, the 14-time major champ would also need Bryson DeChambeau to finish T15 or worse, Justin Rose to finish in a three-way tie for 5th or worse, Tony Finau to finish T3 or worse, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas to be in a three-way tie for 2nd or worse and, lastly, Keegan Bradley to finish T2 or worse.

Is it possible? Sure. Likely? Maybe not. But at this time last year, few would have bet that Woods would make it this far anyway.

UPDATE: After Woods has built a three-shot lead after 54 holes, this scenario isn’t so far fetched after all.

Tiger Woods's final start of the season will be this week at East Lake.
