Check in every week for the unfiltered opinions of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topics in the sport, and join the conversation by tweeting us at @golf_com. This week, we discuss Viktor Hovland’s win, Justin Thomas’ close call and look at potential Masters Cinderella stories.

Viktor Hovland beat Justin Thomas by one to win the Valspar Championship on Sunday, his first victory since he won the BMW Championship and Tour Championship back to back in August 2023. It had been a struggle for him since then, and he missed his last three cuts entering this week. What was the difference at the Valspar? And are you a believer that he’s back? Or do you need to see more?

Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): It’s hard to believe he’s really back when Hovland himself doesn’t seem to think he is. By his own admission, he is still hitting a lot of what he calls “disgusting” shots. But this week, he managed his game beautifully, especially down the stretch, leaning on his iron game and coming up clutch with the putter. I don’t mean to minimize the win. Winning any tournament is no small feat. But golf is just too fickle–and Hovland himself seems so committed to constant tinkering–to use this week as a predictor of what’s coming next.

Zephyr Melton, assistant editor (@zephyrmelton): Echoing what Sens said above. Hovland won’t be fully “back” until he feels like he has full control of his swing. Sure he won this week, but it doesn’t sound like he’s content with where his game is at. This week is a great step in the right direction, but Hovland’s swing is far from a finished product.

Josh Berhow, managing editor (@Josh_Berhow): He hit some really key irons late — which is exactly where he’s supposed to excel — to set up his last two birdies, but difficult to say this will turn the tide given how transparent he was afterward. His confidence doesn’t seem high — he did just shoot 80 last week — and he seemed surprised to win this thing. But a win like this might do wonders, so perhaps this is just the start of a string of strong finishes and a little more belief.

Thomas held a two-stroke lead late but missed fairways and bogeyed 16 and 18. As someone who hasn’t won since May 2022, is he the headlining pro who needs one most? Or does that honor belong to someone else — Homa? Spieth? etc. — on the PGA Tour?

Sens: Thomas may be in a victory drought, but he’s also won more times (15) than any player other except Rory since 2016. Getting this close has got to feel promising for him on some level. I’d give the “honor” to Spieth, who has been winless for even longer than Thomas, and has arguably fallen farther from his peak than his good friend.

Melton: JT may be in a winless drought, but his game is in a far better spot than Homa and, to a lesser extent, Spieth. I’m sure he’d much rather be holding a trophy tonight rather than stewing on the “what-ifs,” but he’s not nearly as lost as those other two. The next JT win feels close.

Berhow: I’d argue Homa needs it most right now, since he is currently in a very similar spot to Viktor (before he won Sunday). Thomas and Spieth have winless streaks extending a little longer than Homa, although Thomas seems close. Few guys have the firepower he does when he’s on. He barely made the cut at the Valspar and fought to the top of the leaderboard. I think good things are coming for him.

Who had the best — or most cringeworthy — anger-management moment at the Valspar? Patton Kizzire’s putter punt or Adam Hadwin’s sprinkler mishap?

Sens; Kizzire’s putter punt was a novel move. At least, I’d never seen one like it before. But for keystone cop comedy and comeuppance, I give the nod to Hadwin triggering the sprinkler’s wrath.

Melton: The putter punt was great theater, but certainly some embarrassing behavior coming from a seasoned Tour pro. Hadwin’s sprinkler mishap seemed more like bad luck than anything else. I’ll give an honorable mention to Spieth for unleashing an aggressive f-bomb on Saturday. He got his money’s worth with that one.

Berhow: The PPP — Patton Putter Punt — had impressive hang time. He’s gonna shank that thing more times than not. If you are going to punt a putter, you better make good contact. He did. Hadwin’s was definitely more embarrassing.

The Florida swing is officially over. What did you learn?

Sens: That Rory McIlroy is going to win the Masters. (or not).

Melton: Rory is still a dog and Russell Henley is going to be on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Plus, I learned who Joe Highsmith was!

Berhow: Scottie Scheffler is not yet 100 percent following the hand injury. When will he be, and how much can he win when he’s not 100 percent? These are questions we don’t have answers to yet.

We’ll get into Masters storylines and picks more in the coming weeks, but with a hat tip to March Madness tipping off, who is your early Cinderella pick for Augusta National?

Sens: I wouldn’t exactly call it a Cinderella pick, but Joaquin Niemann, LIV’s hottest player this season, would count as something of an upstart win.

Melton: I need to see a top 20 in a major from Niemann (he still doesn’t have one!) before I start picking him. I’ll keep showing love to Russell Henley. Two major top 10s to cap last season and an API win already this year. As they say, he’s trending.

Berhow: I love Niemann at Augusta, but since he’s already taken, how about Keegan Bradley as a long shot? Hasn’t missed a cut in seven starts this season. Five times, he’s been 20th or better. Not a ton of success at Augusta, but he’s finished T22 and T23 in his last two starts. There’s lots to like for someone you can find at +18000 to win. Plus, Bradley contending would make for juicy Ryder Cup captaincy storylines.

Golf is a weird game. It wasn’t so long ago, roughly 18 months, that Viktor Hovland was at the pinnacle of the golf world.

He was coming off a FedEx Cup win, ranked No. 3 in the world and carded an impressive 3-1-1 Ryder Cup performance at Marco Simone. He had also entered the “best in the world” debate. He was feared, admired and on everyone’s mind.

In 2024, the greatness stalled. Some coaching swaps, swing changes and an overall downturn in results dropped him to No. 19 in the world, where he started this week at the 2025 Valspar Championship.

There hadn’t been any signs of improvement early this season. Hovland entered the Valspar after missing three consecutive cuts. But again, golf is a weird game,m and Hovland found something this week to beat Justin Thomas by one shot and claim his seventh-career PGA Tour title.

His stubborn performance while winning at the insanely challenging Copperhead course reminded us all that Vik is still here, and all he needed was to get into the fight once again. Winning at the Tour level is damn near impossible, and for someone like Hovland, perhaps tasting victory in tough conditions was all he needed to get back to where we all expect him to be.

His bag is an interesting one. Most of it is from two-to-three years ago, and as I learned in watching him work with Ping Tour rep Kenton Oates, Hovland is specific about what lands in the bag. If something is working, it stays until it breaks or something new comes along, which is miles better. Hovland is a “hard switcher,” and I love him for it.

Among the 11 players tied for 6th at the Valspar Championship — behind a five-way tie for the lead — perhaps the most feared was Justin Thomas.

Thomas suffered through a well-publicized slump during the 2023 season and hasn’t won since his second major title at the 2022 PGA Championship.

In 2024, things started off better with three straight top-12s, but now Thomas has missed two of his last three cuts heading into the Valspar, an event he’s only finished outside the top 18 once in six tires.

He looked like he was going to continue that streak Saturday when he birdied the opening hole at Innisbrook’s Copperhead course. Despite being a shot back at the start of the day, Thomas was the live betting favorite to win at +550, or 11-2.

But Saturday was not the day Thomas envisioned.

On the par-4 second, he hit his approach to 26 feet, but his first putt raced seven feet past the cup and he three-putted. On the par-4 third, he blasted his third shot from a greenside bunker to six feet, but he missed the putt to fall back to four under.

Sensing a theme here?

He missed a 13-footer for birdie on four and a six-footer for another one on five.

Then came No. 7.

Despite the slow start and the missed opportunities, Thomas was still just three shots back on the seventh green, thanks to a difficult setup and jammed-pack leaderboard at Innisbrook.

But at the seventh, he hit his approach into another greenside bunker and then blasted out to 10 feet. His first putt rolled past the hole, but it only stopped two feet, three inches from the hole. That should have been an easy tap-in and he would have walked away with just a bogey.

It should have been easy, right?

It wasn’t.

Thomas blocked the putt hard and it caught the lip and spun around the cup more than 180 degrees in rejection. Thomas barely reacted as he finished off the last eight inches for a severely deflating double.

There was still more to come for Thomas as he bogeyed the next two holes — including missing a four-footer on No. 8 — and turned in five-over 41 to fall to even par. His odds to win the tournament had fallen all the way to 250-1, or +25000, per GOLF betting expert Brady Kannon.

He made three more bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 79 Saturday, dropping him from five under to three over for the tournament and down to a tie for 66th place. By the time he finished, his odds were 500-1, or +50000, on DraftKings, tied for the worst in the field. He lost 12 strokes to the leader as he’ll go off early Sunday,

It won’t be hard for Thomas to diagnose a cause for his play Saturday. After logging 27 putts each of the first two days, Thomas had surpassed that mark by his 13th hole Saturday. He finished with a whopping 38 putts in the third round, unable to convert a single putt outside three feet. He lost more than seven strokes on the greens in Round 3, the worst mark in the field.

Max Homa remains firmly in contention heading into the final round at the Valspar Championship. The 30-year-old social media star has continued to “play better golf” (his own words to describe his recent success) throughout the weekend, posting two 66s between a Friday 69 and entering Sunday at 13-under, just one stroke off the lead.

Paul Casey held a one-stroke lead over Dustin Johnson through 54 holes at the Valspar Championship, but could Casey hold off the World No. 1 and repeat at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead course? Here’s what you missed on Sunday in Palm Harbor, Fla.

Who won: Paul Casey (one-over 72, eight under overall)

How it happened: Casey made the turn in one over on his round and was tied at eight under with Louis Oosthuizen. The 41-year-old grabbed the solo lead two more times on the back nine only to surrender it with bogeys, and after a three-putt bogey from 42 feet on the 17th, Casey teed off on 18 tied with Jason Kokrak at eight under as Oosthuizen (69) held the clubhouse lead at seven under. Playing in the group ahead of Casey, Korak (71) bogeyed the 18th to give the solo lead back to Casey, who drove it in a fairway bunker. But Casey knocked it to 22 1/2 feet and two-putted for a one-shot win.

Why it matters: Casey is the first back-to-back winner in the Valspar Championship’s history. He’s now won three times on the PGA Tour to go with his 13 European tour wins.

Best shot when it mattered: Casey drove it into the fairway bunker on 18 and faced 130 yards to the green and had marginal space to clear the bunker lip on his approach. He pulled it off and hit it to 22 1/2 feet, which all-but secured his victory.

What about DJ?: Johnson started the day a shot behind Casey and in the final pairing, but he failed to make a birdie all round. He made three bogeys and shot 74, tying for 6th.

Best shot from an invisible man: Luke Donald holed out for eagle — from under the TV tower and off your screen, on the 1st hole.

Sixty-two of the top 64 in the world are in the field (Rickie Fowler and Adam Scott declined invites) and Bubba Watson is back to defend his title. Tiger Woods is also in the field; he hasn’t played the event since 2013, before it started group-play matches. The Match Play will also serve as the final Masters tune-up for a majority of the field.

UPDATE: We’ve gotten some clarity on Woods’s upcoming 2019 schedule. That includes:

WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY, March 27-31

THE MASTERS, April 11-14

It also means Woods will be skipping the Valspar Championship in Tampa, plus taking a week off in between his trips to Austin and Augusta. You can read the original post below for further predictions.

–

Tiger Woods announced at last week’s WGC-Mexico Championship that he would be skipping the upcoming Honda Classic, a difficult decision given the event is at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., which is nearly in Woods’s backyard. But without playing five weeks in a row, skipping the Honda felt like Woods’s only option. So where will we see the 14-time major champion going forward? Let’s take a look at the schedule and figure it out.

BAY HILL, March 7-10

Yes, he’ll be there. The decision to forgo the Honda in favor of Bay Hill reaffirmed what we already knew — Woods is unlikely to ever, ever skip Arnie’s event. He’ll likely head up to Orlando on Tuesday, March 5 to gear up for the week’s action.

In his words: “I’ve won eight times at Bay Hill,” Woods pointed out Thursday. Enough said.

Unfortunately, due to the schedule this year, I cannot play all the events I want to. I will be taking next week off and playing in the @APinv and @THEPLAYERSChamp. Sorry to miss seeing Jack and everyone at Honda.

— Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) February 21, 2019

THE PLAYERS, March 14-17

Double yes. Despite whatever Phil Mickelson was saying about the Players being skippable, Woods has always placed valued on the event and has had plenty of success at TPC Sawgrass, including two wins.

In his words: “Well, I take a lot of pride in playing well in the biggest events. So that being obviously the majors, THE PLAYERS, and the World Golf Championships.”

VALSPAR, March 21-24

Unlikely – but not impossible. Woods has gone out of his way to be complimentary of his experience at Innisbrook last year, but returning to the site of his T2 would mean playing at least three weeks in a row. Woods added the Tampa event last minute after he’d missed the cut at the Genesis to get some extra reps in. That’s no concern this year.

In his words: “I had an unbelievable week last year…So it gets very complicated. That’s what I’m trying to figure out, how much to play, how much is too much, how much is not enough, and at the end of the day being race ready enough for April and making sure I get enough competitive rounds. That’s one of the reasons why I put in Tampa last year after I missed the cut in L.A., to make sure I get some rounds in and be race ready. This year’s even more complicated. I feel better, but I’ve got four events right there in my state that I live in and it gets very complicated.”

Tiger Woods electrified crowds at last year’s Valspar.

WGC-DELL TECHNOLOGIES MATCH PLAY, March 27-31

Yes – we think. If there’s anything to be learned from Woods’s first-time stop in Mexico City, it’s that he values WGCs (and the points associated). A strong showing in Austin could get this year’s Presidents Cup captain that much closer to qualifying for his own team come December.

In his words: “I’ve won eight times at Bay Hill and a couple times at THE PLAYERS, and I loved my time last year in Tampa, and maybe roll into Match Play. So it’s still a work in progress, I haven’t figured it all out. Try to 3 Tee-Scripts.com figure out what is best to play and be ready come April.”

THE MASTERS, April 11-14

Yeah, duh.

In his words: According to Woods, his prep for Augusta “started probably back in October, November, so yeah…”

WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP, May 2-5

Yeah, probably. This event’s spot on the new schedule make it the perfect tune-up for the PGA Championship two weeks later, and given Woods is unlikely to wander close to the RBC Heritage, the Zurich Classic or the Byron Nelson, this seems like a slam-dunk.

In his words: “They made some adjustments and made this golf course more difficult, harder, longer, and you can see why they hosted a PGA here,” Woods said last year, when he struggled on the greens en route to a T55.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP, May 16-19

Yup. It’s a major. Don’t even need to hear from TW on this one.

THE MEMORIAL, May 30-June 2

Woods won’t skip Arnie’s event in Orlando, and he won’t skip Jack’s event in Columbus. Muirfield Village has been plenty hospitable to Woods throughout his career, and he threatened to contend before late mistakes saw him slip to T23 last year.

U.S. OPEN, June 13-16

Watching Tiger Woods attack Pebble Beach 19 years after his 15-shot victory is guaranteed to be a treat. Everything about Pebble this year will be a treat. It’s Pebble Beach! It’s the U.S. Open!

Predicting beyond Pebble feels a bit guess-y several months out. Will he add an event before heading to Portrush for the British Open? Will he jet back to get into the WGC in Tennessee? And will he play all three playoff events? I’d lean towards “yes” on all three of those – but we’ll see. Plan travel accordingly, Tiger fans. And in the meantime, enjoy the Florida Swing.
