After a complete brand overhaul, Mizuno is releasing its first driver and metalwoods line in two years, something that might bring their long clubs out from behind the shadow of their irons. And there’s a really cool story of how they got there.

The company is announcing its JPX One line of woods, including the JPX One and JPX One Select drivers, which sport an industry-first Nanoalloy face.

“This didn’t feel like an evolution of anything we’d done before,” Mizuno Director of Golf Chris Voshall told GOLF. “It felt like the start of something completely new. The technology was so different in how it behaved at impact that it didn’t make sense to keep calling it ST. That’s why we went back to JPX and called it ONE, this is the beginning of something bigger.”

What’s actually new with the Mizuno JPX One woods — and why you should care

The world’s first Nanoalloy driver

Mizuno has been teasing the Nanoalloy story ever since they opened their new fitting and R&D facility in Georgia, the Foundry, last year, with a timeline claiming 2026 is when they’d introduce the “world’s first ‘blank’ driver.”

While the blue face might draw comparisons to carbon fiber, Nanoalloy is actually a material from the nylon family that is used in Mizuno’s baseball and softball bats. It’s also been used in graphite wood shafts.

It turns out the material has a very unique property, allowing it be very firm at rest and then very flexible when put under tension. That means it can have more spring effect when it’s impacting a golf ball, producing more ball speed and a larger area where you can get those ball speeds from.

“It gives you the ability to put it on the face of a driver to conform to all the testing, check all the boxes that it needs to,” Voshall said. “But then when you impact it, it changes the dynamic of what happens at impact and how the ball and face interact.”

Remember the “goop” you used to play with in science class, made from cornstarch and water? It was a liquid until you would smack it and then it would firm up. This is the exact opposite.

The JPX One driver face isn’t completely made of the Nanoalloy. The face is made from ultra-thin forged titanium and then the Nanoalloy face is placed on top. Because of the combination, the Titanium face is 10 percent thinner than on previous Mizuno drivers. That meant there was no longer a need for the Cortech Chamber along the leading edge to boost face flex.

Starting over with ‘One’

The ST230 line of woods was super successful for Mizuno, but with the new Nanoalloy technology being so different, Mizuno decided it was time for a change to something different.

With that, Mizuno left the ST230 family of drivers on the retail shelves for an extra year and dropped the prices down to $299. They sold six times as many drivers in the final year of the product cycle as they did in the first. This was all done to give fitters a reason to pull Mizuno heads out of the drawer and players a reason to buy them.

Then, with the branding, Mizuno ended up building off the success of their JPX irons line, which Voshall called their more “technology” focused brand. The “One” signifies the brand’s reset.

A reengineered Cortech Chamber and Speed Bevel sole

Because of the smaller face sizes, the Nanoalloy wasn’t beneficial to the fairway wood or hybrids, but they do have a reeingeered Cortech Chamber.

Instead of the weight within the chamber being rectangular, Mizuno made it narrower in the middle and wider toward the heel and toe. That helps not only shots hit lower on the face, but also gives heel and toe strikes a boost.

The sole of both clubs was also reshaped into a new Speed Bevel sole, which lets the clubs enter and exit the turf a little easier.

The Mizuno JPX One woods lineup

There may be only two driver models — plus a single fairway and hybrid — but Voshall says Mizuno isn’t leaving golfers out. The Nanoalloy face frees up mass that’s pushed elsewhere in the head, dialing up forgiveness in both the standard and Select heads.

“This isn’t about making one extreme model and one forgiving model anymore,” Voshall said. “We wanted two heads that could fit almost anyone, but still feel and perform like a Mizuno.”

In addition to the blue face on the driver, the longtime brand color of Mizuno, the carbon composite crowns of the driver, fairway and hybrid sport a more subtle blue hue when seen in sunlight. Both drivers also feature an adjustable backweight for swingweighting.

JPX One Driver

What is it: The standard JPX One model driver is the higher MOI, longer front-to-back and heel-to-toe model. It features an adjustable backweight and a more straight bias with an upright lie angle than the JPX One Select.

Who it’s for: Of the two models, the JPX One is going to fit the majority of golfers, but could also contend for better players thanks to its stability and fast ball speeds.

JPX One Select Driver

What is it: A slightly more pear-shaped and compact profile, the JPX One Select is going to target the better player who wants to retain workability and get maximum speed. While still being a 460 cc, the Select has a deeper face than the standard. It also has a flatter lie angle and more face progression to produce a fade bias.

Who it’s for: The Select is for the player seeking to cut spin and fight a left miss off the tee.

JPX One Fairway woods

What is it: The JPX One fairway woods have the new Speed Bevel sole and reengineered Coretech Chamber to help low strikes. An MAS1C steel face ensures high ball speeds. There is also a 3T model that is more compact and one degree flatter than the standard 3-wood.

Who it’s for: The JPX One serves as a nice middle of the road for face height, leaving it a nice option for players who use it both off the deck and the tee.

JPX One Hybrid

What is it: The hybrid also features the need Speed Bevel sole and reshaped Coretech chamber while taking a nice compact shape.

Who is for: A great option for someone who wants a more compact, iron-like hybrid that is on more neutral side for bias.

My take: Start paying attention to Mizuno woods

Mizuno has quietly rebranded its whole lineup by splitting the Mizuno Pro lines, bringing wedges and golf balls under that name and now moving woods back again to the JPX brand. The JPX brand, of course, gained a ton of visibility with the Tour model irons being used by Brooks Koepka to win four majors in the last decade.

If this is the move that finally gets Mizuno woods the praise they deserve, then here’s to it.

I really enjoyed the ST-Z 230 driver, a great performer that has been in the bag of Keith Mitchell, who’s among the best drivers on the PGA Tour.

And that’s not to say that my short time testing the JPX One Select driver didn’t yield even better results.

Both drivers have a great look at the address and if the numbers were good, I’d have no problem gaming either. For me, the Select sits a hair more open to my liking and really explodes off the face.

I love the story of the new Nanoalloy face and the fact that it’s truly different from what else is out there in terms of multimaterial faces.

Mizuno has staked its reputation on the iconic forged feel of their irons produced in Japan.

With its new M.Craft City Series putters, the company is leaning into that heritage with four new forged putter models, each representing a specific Japanese city.

“There are very few forged putters in the market, and even fewer forged in Japan,” Mizuno Director of Golf Chris Voshall told GOLF. “That’s something we’re really proud of, and we wanted the naming, the design, and the feel to reflect that.”

The four different models, two blades and two mallets, each come with two different neck configurations and two different finishes: grey ion or nickel.

What’s actually new with Mizuno M.Craft City Series — and why you should care

Baking Mizuno Pro feel into putters

The new M.Craft City Series line features many of the technologies known for making Mizuno’s irons so soft-feeling.

“There’s a ton of our Mizuno Pro and MP iron technology baked into these putters,” Voshall said. “From the forging process to the materials to the copper underlay, those are all feel levers we pull to make sure the putter feels as soft and as consistent as possible.”

The putters are forged from one piece of Pure Select 1025E Mild Carbon Steel, the same material used in the Mizuno Pro S-Series irons and recently announced M-Series short irons. They also feature the same copper underlay of Mizuno’s forged irons, refining vibration for a softer, more rewarding feedback.

A deep-milled putter face reduces contact points with the ball, further softening the feel.

Call-outs to Japanese cities

The heart of the City Series line is Mizuno’s nod to the company’s Japanese history. The model names are specifically chosen to match the city’s history with the characteristics of the putter head.

For instance, the Kyoto model, a classic cavity blade shape, is named for Japan’s ancient capital, which is also famous for the numerous Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, palaces and gardens.

On the flip side, the winged-mallet, Tokyo, represents the most modern shape in the lineup and its namesake reflects that as the current capital and technology hub of Japan.

Plenty of options to find a fit

With four different head shapes and two neck options for each model — plumbers and slant for the blades and slant and double bend for the mallets — there are no shortage of fitting options for the new line.

“For a one-piece forged putter, you still need options,” Voshall said. “Neck configurations and weight adjustments let us dial in performance without sacrificing feel.”

Additionally, all the putters feature adjustable weights on the sole, allowing players to fine-tune swingweight, CG placement and by extension even toe flow.

The Mizuno M.Craft City Series

Each of the four M.Craft City Series models is available in both grey ion or nickel finishes and with two neck options.

Kyoto P/S (Blade)

What is it: Taking the name of Japan’s historic capital city, the Kyoto is an answer-style blade available with either a plumber’s neck or slant.

Who is for: Those seeking the most traditional look at address and moderate to high toe flow, depending on the neck.

Osaka P/S (Wide-body blade)

What is it: Osaka is Japan’s cultural hub and is where Mizuno’s headquarters are. The wide-body blade embodies the city with the combination of both traditional looks and modern forgiveness. It has a slightly shorter heel-to-toe length than the Kyoto and is also available with both a plumber’s and a slant neck.

Who is for: Players searching for a traditional look at address with a bit of added forgiveness thanks to the higher MOI of a wide-body blade.

Nagoya S/B (Round mid-mallet)

What is it: The city of Nagoya is somewhat of an underrated tech city, Voshall said. The headquarters of automobile giant Toyota are nearby, and the namesake putter uses a round mid-mallet shape that blends classic looks and forgiveness. The mallet models have either a slant neck or double bend shaft.

Who is for: Players who want a mallet shape without all the bells and whistles.

Tokyo S/B (Winged mallet)

What is it: Tokyo is Japan’s modern capital and one of the most modern cities in the world and so the Tokyo model is the highest MOI shape of the line. Like the Nagoya, the Tokyo is available with either a mid-toe flow slant neck or a face-balance double bend.

Who is for: The player who wants maximum forgiveness and has no issues with a wing shape.

My take: A solid feel at a great price

Taking 1025 carbon steel and forging single-piece putters in Japan? As someone who loves soft-feeling putters, that’s the kind of sentence that makes me dance.

Mizuno nails the feel box here with these putters and, perhaps more importantly, keeps them at the price point where the only comparable feel putters are synthetic inserts.

As someone who has played Mizuno irons for most of their life, the putters have that same feel with a solid, but at the same time soft senation when you strike them. These putters roll beautifully and have the feel of a much more expensive putter.

The company also did a great job offering four different heads, but essentially 16 different putters when you consider the options of the two finishes and two necks for each model.

M.Craft City Series is a putter line with a great story behind it and will serve as a fantastic and affordable option for a player looking for a soft feel off their putter.

Mizuno is reshaping how you think about its flagship Mizuno Pro line.

Now you no longer need to sacrifice cutting-edge technology to get Mizuno Pro’s signature feel and look. And you can take your pick for what you want in a players distance iron.

Building on 2025’s launches of the Mizuno Pro Signature line, featuring the Pro S-3 and S-1 single-piece forged irons, the company is unveiling its new Mizuno Pro Modern line with the Pro M-13, Pro M-15 and Pro Fli-Hi irons.

“It’s tough to have classics when you’re putting technology in them because technology is dated,” Mizuno Director of Golf Chris Voshall told GOLF. “The high COR golf club today is way different than the highest COR golf club three years ago, even. So to say those are timeless designs would be a misnomer when you’re talking about a ‘high-tech Mizuno Pro’ club. So that’s why we wanted to execute the M-Series with a two-year life, which is basically how high tech can we get today?

“Allow the Signature series to be those timeless designs. Allow the Modern Series to be our best execution of today’s technology.”

The new M-13 and M-15 irons replace the previous Pro 243 and 245 irons from 2024. The M-series will be the future home of player performance and players’ distance irons in the Mizuno Pro family with two-year life cycles, while the S-series will continue to offer different variations of classic single-piece forging options for elite ball strikers in four-year life-cycles.

What’s actually new with Mizuno Pro M-series — and why you should care

Contour Ellipse Face

The Contour Ellipse Face was first brought from Mizuno’s wildly popular JPX Hot Metal line to the company’s forged irons in last year’s JPX 925 Forged iron, which saw that iron receive a 14-point boost in COR to achieve faster ball speeds.

Now that technology has been brought to the more players’ shaped Mizuno Pro line in the M-series lineup. The M-13 features the new face technology in the 4- and 5-iron, while the M-15 has it in the 4-8-irons, and all lofts of the Fli Hi feature it. The new face technology not only boosts ball speeds, but increased the area of the face where players can achieve those ball speeds from, boosting forgiveness as well.

New Sole Geometry

The M-13 has the new Triple Cut Sole that Mizuno first used in the Pro S-3 and JPX 925 Forged irons, which features a sharp leading edge and trailing edge bevel to enter and exit the turf with high bounce and prevent from digging or dragging.

The M-15 does not have the Triple Cut Sole, but has a more rounded leading edge and the same, higher, measured bounce of the M-13 to improve turf interaction.

Progressive CGs and easy combo sets

M-15 irons use over 50 g of tungsten weighting in the 4-7 irons to strategically lower the CG for higher launch in the longer irons and add stability in the mid irons.

Additionally, both the M-13 and M-15 feature identical offset measurements, making the two sets easy to mix and match for combo sets. With just .122″ of offset in the 7-iron, the M-15 irons will have among the least offset in their class.

And while combo-ing is easy, each set has three progressive constructions from the long to the short irons. That means there’s enough help in the long irons and control in the short irons where most won’t have to combo them. They’re basically combo sets already.

The 2026 Mizuno Pro M-Series Lineup

The new Mizuno Pro M-Series lineup offers three models covering the player performance, player’s distance and utility irons categories.

Pro M-13 irons

What is it: The M-13 is the replacement for Mizuno’s 243 iron, which the company calls its “Speed cavity.” The Pro M-13 offers similar shaping to what is found in Mizuno’s tour irons like the Pro S-3, but with a tech edge and stronger lofts to give it a little bit of distance boost. M-13 has three different constructions with the Contour Ellipse face in the 4-5-irons, Microslot technology in the 6-8-iron, and then a single-piece 1025E carbon steel construction in the 9-iron through GW, similar to the Pro S-3 irons. The 4-8-irons are forged with 4120 and 4115 Chromoly with 431 stainless steel back pieces.

Who it’s for: M-13 is for the player who doesn’t quite have the precision or consistency to wield a single-piece forging like the Pro S-3, or perhaps a great ball striker who would like to regain some lost speed. The irons will have a wide range of handicap users and could make it into the bags of elite players as a long iron replacement.

Pro M-15 irons

What is it: M-15 is Mizuno’s hollow-bodied players’ distance iron option and they fall on the more compact side of the category with identical offset to the M-13s. Also like M-13, M-15 features three different constructions with Grain Flow Forged Chromoly in the 4-8-irons and GFF 1025E carbon steel in the 9-GW. Instead of a Triple Cut Sole, M-15 has a more rounded leading edge, but retains extra bounce. Unlike competitors, Mizuno does not fill the cavities of their hollow-bodied irons, instead using a slightly thicker face that doesn’t require the bracing of foam or ceramic.

Who it’s for: For players looking to jump into the players distance category for the first time, M-15 is a great option, as well as those seeking extra distance from the most compact package possible. M-15 will also get a lot of play as a 4-5-iron replacement in better players’ bags.

Fli-Hi ’26 Utility irons

What is it: The Fli Hi is the only cast member of the Mizuno Pro lineup, rather than forged. The Fli Hi gains the new Contour Ellipse Face and new internal sound ribs to improve sound and feel. To promote easier launch, the tungsten weight was increased to 26 g and positioned lower and the face height was shrunk. The face is ultra-high-strength heat-treated 4335+ Nickel Chromoly, the same material as the JPX Hot Metal irons for fast ball speeds, while the body is not heat-treated to allow for hosel bendability.

Who it’s for: Anyone looking for a transition between their longest irons and their fairway woods should check out the new Fli Hi, especially if they prefer a more compact shape and don’t like hybrids. The offset blends seamlessly with the M-13 and M-15s.

My take: Expanding what Mizuno Pro means

Gone are the days of Mizuno being a company purely for the world’s best ballstrikers.

With the new Mizuno Pro M-Series, the company now offers several options for players who want more compact shapes, but want the distance boost of modern technology.

Welcome to GOLF’s Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Each Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh will run you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

ST SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The final week of the PGA Tour season brings with it plenty of stress as players look to lock up their playing status for 2026, and it’s led to a very interesting week in gear.

But being on the ground at Sea Island Golf Club, home of the RSM Classic, this week also gave us a chance to get to know the newest PGA Tour winner, Adam Schenk, and what he calls his “complicated” relationship with gear. We call it life as a gear nerd.

Schenk won last week with a bag setup that didn’t include a fairway wood, and just three clubs (his wedges) released post-2018, including his original Odyssey Tri-Hot Rossie putter from the early 2000s. He had a split set of irons from two brands — Ping i210 2- through 5-iron and then Mizuno MP-18 SCs 6-PW with an MP-18 MMC 8-iron tucked away in there too.

That’s just what was in the bag in Bermuda. Schenk is known as one of the most notorious gear switchers on the PGA Tour with a solid rotation of sticks, but rarely anything new.

At his press conference at Sea Island on Tuesday, I asked Schenk about his relationship with gear and got one of the most insightful answers I’ve heard this season.

Schenk started off by saying he likes to tinker and likes to set his bag up to prioritize accuracy over length. To do that, he needs more spin, which the older equipment gives him.

“I generally set up my bag to go straight,” he said. “So like my driver, I launch it lower so I need spin. So I have a lot of speed, kind of created in a little inefficient way, but like I have to have enough spin. So like the older equipment, a lot of time goes shorter for me, and it spins more, so that’s why I generally set up my bag that way.”

Spin is also a reason why Schenk says he is one of the last remaining users of the 2017 Titleist Pro V1.

The trope isn’t unheard of. Two years ago, Billy Horschel claimed more pros hit fades these days because they don’t have to worry about them over-spinning with modern equipment. Tiger Woods has often complained that the modern golf ball doesn’t spin as much as it used to and because of that, he isn’t able to shape shots to the same degree as he could early in his career.

It’s something that almost everyone agrees on, and is why you see many pros weakening lofts to get spin back in the bag. If there’s one thing they can do, it’s take spin off, like Schenk did with his 150-yard 4-irons in the heavy breezes in Bermuda last week.

He also said he’ll switch his driver setup depending on not just what the course presents, but also the weather conditions on a given day.

“If it’s the John Deere Classic and it’s 95 degrees, I can swing 124 or 125 [mph] pretty easily. If you’re at Pebble Beach teeing off and it’s 52 degrees, good luck,” Schenk explained. “You’re not going to be able to swing that same driver that fast. You’re going to be able to swing 116, 17 maybe. So like that driver setup that you have when it’s 95 degrees is not going to perform the same.

“I’m not going to play the same driver if it’s 52 degrees or if it’s 95. I’m going to have to make some small change or I’m going to have to swing the driver that I would play at John Deere significantly different or I’m going to lose it really, really, far right once or twice.”

As for his plans this week, Schenk’s caddie, Rob Bradley, said he might even use both drivers he has this week — the Ping G400 he won last week with and a G430 Max. One for draws and one for fades. But for Round 1 on the Plantation course, Schenk just went with the G400. It’s possible that it could change throughout the week, according to Tour reps I spoke with. That’s not an unusual occurrence for him, maybe even more than 50 percent of the time.

Gear

Nor is playing a split set of irons from two different manufacturers in a model progression that might not even make sense — such as how there is an MP-18 MMC 8-iron tucked into his 6-PW set of MP 18-SCs. Why is the 8-iron a more forgiving model? Schenk’s answer was on-brand.

“I was having problems with my 8-iron not spinning enough so that was the first 8-iron that I found,” he said. “I was looking for the split cavity (SC) 8-iron, I couldn’t find a new one. The one new one I have has a big rock mark in the middle of it. I was like, I don’t know if that really matters but it’s big enough to where it could.”

Schenk probably exhausted all options looking for an MP-18 SC 8-iron replacement. A rep told me he has no problems trying to buy what he’s looking for on eBay or elsewhere if he can’t find it on a truck.

But this 8-iron also carries some sentimental value.

“So I made my first cut ever on the PGA Tour, funny enough, with those Mizuno MP-18 MMCs, multi-material cavity. That’s the 8-iron that I played in Jackson, Mississippi, my first cut ever on Tour and that was my third or fourth event with it in the bag. My other 8-iron was just going way too far, not spinning enough.”

I’m pretty biased, but as a gear reporter, it’s really cool to hear a Tour pro be so passionate about his or her equipment. I think everyone has a relationship like that with their first nice putter or the driver that won them a club championship.

Adam Schenk might have that with every piece of gear he owns and that’s awesome. It’s very clear he thinks about gear way differently than most PGA Tour pros.

TaylorMade Qi4D, Ping G440 K make PGA Tour debuts

The last official PGA Tour event of 2025 featured the debuts of two new 2026 drivers on the U.S. circuit.

TaylorMade’s Qi4D driver made its way into the bags of two of the company’s young, rising star staffers in Karl Vilips and Luke Clanton.

Ben Polland, this year’s PGA Professional Championship winner, also had the new driver in the bag. Both Vilips and Polland had 9.0-degree heads while Clanton had an 8.0-degree head.

Conversion for the Qi4D family has been very strong with six players gaming it the first week it was on the conforming list two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, including Tommy Fleetwood (LS) and Rory McIlroy. This week was the first week the new heads were seeded on the U.S. Tour and to get both Clanton and Vilips into it right off the bat is significant.

Vilips gained .737 strokes off the tee in Round 1 on the Seaside course — the only course with ShotLink this week — and heads into the weekend at 10-under after consecutive 66s to start the week. Also on Seaside on Thursday, Clanton gained .972 shots off the tee in an opening-round 67.

Also seeing strong conversion is Ping’s new G440 K driver, which saw three players bag it this week.

Taylor Montgomery, Trey Mullinax and Kevin Streelman each put the new driver in play, which is presumably the successor to the popular G430 Max 10K used by Ben Griffin to win three times this year.

Mullinax is in the top 30 on the leaderboard after two rounds and picked up .883 SG: Off-the-Tee in Round 1 at Seaside as he fights to retain his playing status for next year.

Scottsdale Tec putters draw lots of intrigue

The line features all white mallet models in several hosel configurations, including two in Ping’s Onset low torque setup. The low torque options are the Ally Blue Onset, which has been part of the PLD offerings on Tour, and the Ketsch Onset, which is a new shape to Ping’s Onset offerings.

While Ping unveiled their super soft Scottsdale line in March, it garnered much interest on the PGA Tour, though it did get some action in Europe. The new Scottsdale Tec putters appear to have a new, more responsive insert.

Sahith Theegala was among the pros giving them a long test on the practice green and ordered one to be sent home for him to continue testing in the offseason.

Busy week for Tour Reps

Perhaps no one was busier this week at Sea Island than Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill. Actually, that probably applies to all the Tour reps onsite this week at the RSM Classic, as all of the players in the field likely hadn’t seen any of the Tour trucks for three weeks, since the Bank of Utah Championship.

Trucks weren’t at the last two PGA Tour stops in Bermuda and Mexico as they were outside the U.S., and the logistics were too challenging.

With around 90 to 100 players in this week’s 156-player field who play one or more Vokey wedges in their bags, that’s a lot of work for Dill and the Vokey team to catch up on any service needs from the last couple of weeks.

But then add to it that many players are playing for their jobs this week with the cut off of the FedEx Cup Fall top-100 to retain full status for next year and that many players are looking for fresh gear to break in and practice with over the offseason, Dill and team were slammed.

“It’s pretty nice to have a lot to do and a lot of players to work with,” Dill told GOLF. “It’s just a sign that we’re doing good work.”

Dill said players were mostly focused on fine-tuning the clubs they already had, or getting fresh grooves for the week in their lob wedges, but one trend Dill noticed was some players looking for more bounce in their sand wedges at Sea Island Golf Club.

“Players that are in a .08M-grind or a .10S, those players have the ability to increase bounce,” Dill said. “But we want to make sure that they’re doing it in a specific and calculated way. We’re not just trying to throw more bounce at them for everything. It’s where do we need more bounce? While still maintaining some versatility or some sort of short game component. So you just got to ask questions and find that balance.”

There were also plenty of players looking to order new gear for next year.

Odyssey’s Cody Hale said many players fighting for their status aren’t looking to break in new gear, just have their specs checked and maybe fresh grips here and there. But there are also plenty of guys ordering new stuff for next year.

“We’re taking a lot of orders and getting them prepared to send out for testing for the start of the year,” Hale said. “With new product coming out, that’s always a good time to pique their interest.

“We have a few new products that we’ll start sending out in the next couple of weeks that aren’t on the [practice] green.”

The Callaway team was also busy on the back end of the range, doing their annual testing of the new 2026 driver line. This is something that happens every year at RSM and while I couldn’t witness it, it should get everyone excited for what is coming in 2026.

Sigg is just two shots off the lead after 36 holes … Speaking of Dumont de Chassart, in his first start on the PGA Tour since re-earning his card on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, he becomes the latest PGA Tour user of the mysterious Callaway Apex MB ’26s … Tommy Gainey got into the field this week as an alternate with a cool set of Rouge ST and Paradym Ai-Smoke game-improvement irons … Brice Garnett is playing a set of Callaway X Forged Max irons … Project X Titan shafts debuted this week, although prototypes have been floating around, including in the bag of Austin Eckroat.

If 2024 was the year of the driver, then we’re pretty confident in saying 2025 was the year of the iron.

From releases like Titleist’s new 2025 T-Series, TaylorMade’s fifth-generation P790 and sustained run of the P770 and P7CB, Ping’s i240, Mizuno’s JPX 925 and Pro S-3, Callaway’s X Forged and Ai150, Srixon’s ZXi lineup and Cobra’s full retail release of the 3DP Tour, the market has never been this deep.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-hosts Johnny Wunder and Jake Morrow were going over this year’s iron releases, specifically in the cavity back category, and Morrow made an interesting point about golf club manufacturers’ focus.

Irons

“You have this incredible cavity back market, but it seems like all of the OEMs are trying to push the one that’s like slightly above that,” Morrow said.

As Morrow points out, there are only so many things you can do a cavity back iron before it becomes something that is more game-improvement, but not quite that size in chassis.

You have irons like TaylorMade’s P7CB, Titleist T100, Mizuno Pro S-3, Callaway X Forged, Srixon ZXi7, and so on. But it seems like the clubs the OEMs believe more golfers, even low handicappers, should buy are the P770, T150 and T250, JPX 925 Forged and Hot Metal Pro, X Forged Max and Ai150 and ZXi5.

These clubs live in a category that is more playable than the traditional cavity back iron, but isn’t quite in the size, looks or ball speed performance of the players distance category. It’s almost as if there’s a brand new iron category forming between players cavity backs and players distance.

“You’re seeing a little bit with drivers too, is the super game improvement ones and the player drivers, the gap between the two of them are getting smaller and smaller,” Wunder said. “And these R&D departments are able to put a lot of technology in a smaller package.”

Morrow pointed out that TaylorMade probably made the second-generation P770, the first to adopt a hollow body design in 2020, was probably a bit too hot for most of the players it was aimed out.

Now the focus is on finding a hollow-body iron that isn’t as fast as those in the players’ distance category, but retains the ball speed and spin retention traits of those designs.

Golfers who play cavity back and blade irons use them because they want consistency and control. If you can give them irons that offer that same level of control, but also more forgiveness for their bad swings, they’re going to use them.

Wunder and Morrow already got to see this in action with PXG’s new 8th-generation “T” iron at a preview event earlier this month, which would presumably fall into this new category.

It seems that won’t be the last iron that falls into this new between players and players distance category.

A brand new Mizuno Pro S-3 6-iron arrived for Marco Penge in Spain on Thursday.

The issue? The Open de España, which Penge was playing in, ended last Sunday. He was long gone.

Yet Penge had a different, brand new Mizuno Pro S-3 6-iron in the bag Sunday as he took down Daniel Brown in a playoff to win his third DP World Tour title this season and punch his tickets to the 2026 Masters and Open Championship.

How and why Penge needed a new 6-iron — and later pitching wedge — can be told by Mizuno Senior Tour Representative on the DP World Tour, Joe Beck.

How Marco Penge’s 6-iron was damaged

After a disappointing week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where he finished tied for 91st, Penge and his caddie, Max Bill, arrived in Spain for the next event when they realized Penge’s 6-iron was damaged to the point of non-conformance after hitting a rock with a swing at the Dunhill.

Beck and the Mizuno DP World Tour team only found out on Tuesday and their truck wasn’t at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid because of logistical reasons. So Beck had a replacement 6-iron built for Penge and shipped out that day from England, hoping for delivery by Thursday morning.

Problem solved? Nope, that was the club that was finally just delivered this week.

“It’s a little bit more difficult for us now,” Beck told GOLF. “Trying to ship into Europe with Brexit and shipping regulations, time frame it takes a lot longer than it should to get stuff to players.”

As Beck kept tracking the package, he soon realized the replacement club wasn’t going to get to Penge.

Another casualty

But the 27-year-old Englishman carried on with a replacement Titleist 620 CB 6-iron, as reported by John Whyte of SMS on Tour. With a third-round 64, Penge took a four-shot lead into Sunday.

And that was while playing most of that round down another club.

On the second hole, Penge pulled his tee shot left and saw it settle just inside a tree. Basically standing next to the trunk to try and advance the ball, he took a swing with his pitching wedge, trying to stop his swing before hitting the tree, but it was of little use.

The shaft collided with the wood of the trunk and snapped instantly as the ball sailed farther left of the green, still 71 yards away from the pin.

Remarkably, Penge had no such tree trouble with his third and played his next shot to 14 feet and then curled in the putt for an unlikely par. At the time, the preserved Penge’s one-shot lead before he caught fire later in the round, making birdies on eight of 10 holes from Nos. 7 to 16.

“Like finding a bag of gold,” an announcer on the broadcast said.

One more turn

By Saturday, Beck saw the tracking on the replacement 6-iron move farther away from Madrid. With Penge now needing two replacement clubs, the executive decision was for Beck to take a 6 a.m. flight from Gatwick to Madrid on Sunday and hand-deliver the clubs to Penge and Bill.

Despite being on leave that weekend, Beck was approved to go as he was the closest to where Mizuno’s tour truck was based outside of London.

He built a new replacement S-3s for Penge, 2 degrees upright and 2 degrees strong with KBS V10 130 X shafts to match the rest of his set around 8 p.m. Saturday and then got up at 2:30 a.m. to head to the airport. (Fun vacation!)

EasyJet flight 8017 departed LGW at 6:02 a.m. local Sunday and arrived at MAD at 9:21 that morning, and Beck was relieved to see the box on the baggage claim conveyor as he walked into Spanish passport control. But, as if his journey needed another hiccup, the box was gone when he cleared customs.

“So there’s a slight, slight bit of panic set in,” Beck said, who’s been on Tour with the company for four years. “I’ve gone upstairs to the baggage gate to see if it had fallen off the baggage belt. Maybe it had come around and come off.”

Had Beck just flown all the way to another country to deliver replacement clubs to one of the best players in the world, only for the clubs to be mishandled at the airport, or worse, stolen?

Luckily, the panic was short-lived. About 30 minutes went by before Beck returned to the baggage claim and eventually found the box unharmed.

Within an hour Beck was at the course and handing off the fresh 6-iron and pitching wedge to Bill, much to Penge’s surprise.

“I was in contact with Max more than Marco building up to it, but yes, Marco was obviously very thankful and very, very relieved to have 14 clubs,” he said.

Penge shot a one-over 72 on Sunday, but it got him into a playoff, which he won with a birdie on the first extra hole for his third DP World Tour win in 16 starts, all but assuring you’ll see him on the PGA Tour next year.

Think all PGA Tour pros are using the latest $650 driver that just hit the market? Think again.

This weekend, Steven Fisk earned his first PGA Tour win with a Mizuno ST-Z 230 driver. The ST-Z was a huge leap forward for Mizuno, which has been trying to shed the characterization of an iron and wedge-only company for better players, thanks to new technology like its Cortech Chamber.

In fact, the company has continued making the driver for three years since it came out in 2023, and currently, it can be had at retail for just $300. Yes! A brand new driver for just $300.

Fisk isn’t the only player using the ST-Z either. Fellow Mizuno staffer Keith Mitchell, one of the PGA Tour’s premier drivers of the golf ball, also plays the ST-Z, as does Marco Penge, who has won twice on the DP World Tour this season.

Gear

All of Fisk’s clubs are actually throwbacks to the earlier part of the 2020s, from his Mizuno MP-20 irons and T-22 wedges to his Odyssey White Hot OG Rossie putter. The only club in his bag that is a current model year club besides his driver is his Vokey SM10 lob wedge.

While most of those clubs (except limited grinds of the wedges, which I’ll link here and below) aren’t being sold right now, his Ping G430 fairway woods are also an excellent deal.

Fisk plays both a Ping G430 Max 3- and 7-wood, and while that popular line has been replaced by Ping’s G440 line, the 430 fairways are still getting plenty of use out on the PGA Tour.

Those fairway woods can currently be found for just $290 at retail.

With both the driver and the fairway woods this week at the Sanderson Farms, Fisk was fifth in the field in strokes gained: off-the-tee, picking up just under four shots. It makes him a perfect example of going with the club that works the best, not necessarily the most expensive or the newest.

Steven Fisk just collected his first career PGA Tour victory and with it, his winner’s check would allow him to buy 3,600 of the Mizuno driver heads he used at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Fisk, a rookie and Mizuno staffer, uses the company’s ST-Z 230 driver, which is now three years old, but still part of their current metal woods line. For the last two years, the driver has been one of the all-time bargains at retail, selling for just $300, $200 off the original price.

And the ST-Z is no budget driver, as proven by a Tour winner’s success with it. Marco Penge also won twice with it on the DP World Tour this season.

For the rest of Fisk’s bag, he uses an interesting mix of older Mizuno gear, like his MP-20 blades and T22 wedges, as well as an Odyssey putter, Ping fairway woods and Titleist Vokey lob wedge.

Welcome to GOLF’s Fully Equipped new weekly Tour equipment report. Each Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants) GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh will run you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

Collin Morikawa’s year of changes isn’t restricted to caddies — and it’s taking another turn this week in Napa.

Morikawa has played with five different caddies so far this year and made a number of putter swaps, coming from his trusty TaylorMade TP Soto blade to a Spider Tour V mallet, back to the Soto, to a Logan Olson Tour Matrix 1.0 blade, to a custom TaylorMade proto mallet and back to the Soto. He’s also played around with a Qi35 9-wood instead of a 4-iron.

This week brings more swaps, as Morikawa has bagged a new TaylorMade prototype putter, this time a unique Spider Tour V center-shafted prototype and a new P-DHY utility iron for his 4-iron.

The unique prototype putter, which is a version of TaylorMade’s most forward CG mallet, was working so well in testing for the two-time major winner that he put it into play.

“The center shaft [offset and shaft axis] helped his hand position and release through the stroke,” TaylorMade Tour putter fitter James Holley said. “Spider V also gave him a very efficient face-to-path and closure rate. Compared to his old gamer, the center shafted V was better on left to right and longer putts because the face is delivered more square with less late closure, adding spin and inconsistent ball speeds.”

At the other end of the bag, Morikawa has put in TaylorMade’s P-DHY driving iron, the larger of the two P-series driving irons in TaylorMade’s lineup. The P-DHY features a shallower face height and a wider sole to help increase launch and Morikawa was able to hit his cut shot at 4,500 RPM spin and a 215-yard carry.

If one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour is opting to go with a game-improvement style driving iron in place of a traditional 4-iron, it may be worth looking into for your own game.

With both new clubs, Morikawa is four under through two rounds and inside the top-25.

JT goes for GT(3)

Justin Thomas has found his way back onto the U.S. Ryder Cup team after a couple of down years by winning at the RBC Heritage in April and recording eight top-10 finishes.

But according to Titleist tour rep JJ Van Wezenbeeck, Thomas is always searching for ways to further optimize his driver. Despite finishing sixth in strokes gained: total this season, Thomas was 81st off the tee and 148th in total driving.

Thomas opened the season with a Titleist GT2 driver head, the same model he’s played since the Titleist’s GT metals launched on Tour late last summer. While the GT2 has remained constant, he’s tried a few different builds throughout the year, including ones with a prototype Mitsubishi Diamana shaft (which he won with in Hilton Head and had been using recently) and a Fujikura Ventus Black.

But this week, Thomas is going back to Titleist’s lower-spinning “3” head with a new GT3 10.0 driver. Thomas has gone back and forth between Titleist’s “2” and “3” driver heads throughout his career, but most of his wins, including his most recent major at the 2022 PGA Championship, have come with a “3” model.

“Really found an opportunity to go back to a head style that he’s had a lot success with in the ‘3’ model,” Van Wezenbeeck said, adding that the two worked together on drivers in the two weeks since the Tour Championship. “Be able to move to a 10-degree loft from a 9-degree loft and get really good launch-to-spin ratios that’s working really well for Justin.”

Thomas switched out his prototype Diamana shaft for a Diamana ZF 60 TX and also changed his SureFit hosel setting to D-1, lowering the loft back down three-quarters of a degree and moving the sole weight to T1, just toward the toe side.

While he hit just three fairways on Thursday in an opening-round 72, he gained nearly a stroke on the field off the tee and ranked 25th in the category. He again ranked inside the top-25 in SG: off-the-tee during a second-round 70.

Overall, Titleist dominated the driver count this week with 69 players (47 percent) playing a Titleist driver this week, more than double their closest competitor (30).

J.J.’s filling a gap

J.J. Spaun won the U.S. Open with a TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood and 5-wood, but immediately after the victory at the Travelers Championship, the 5-wood was out and matching Qi10 7-wood was back in.

But while the 7-wood was too short to fill his gap between his 3-wood and 4-iron perfectly. And the 5-wood was a bit too long, leading Spaun to switch from week to week depending on course setup.

That gapping issue is what led to Spaun to test and ultimately game a new TaylorMade Qi35 6-wood this week which achieved the perfect 240-yard carry number he was looking for.

Technically, the club is a 7-wood strengthened to 19.5˚, not unlike Scottie Scheffler’s Qi35 7-wood which he refers to as a 5-wood.

But with the new club, Spaun achieves a 240-yard carry with a 157 mph ball speed, 4500 RPM spin and 110-foot apex height, leading to a 46-degree landing angle, giving him a versatile club that can be used off the tee or hold a green on approach.

Through two rounds, Spaun is nine under and in the top-5, five off Ben Griffin’s lead.

Mitchell becomes No. 1 for S-1

Keith Mitchell is breaking in the first set on a worldwide Tour of Mizuno’s new Pro S-1 blades this week at Procore.

Mitchell contributed to the design and shaping of the new iron, which started back in 2022 with the 2019 Honda Classic champion immediately falling in love with the iron’s flatter sole with extra bounce. Mizuno Club Engineer John Freeman said they had been modifying the sole of Mitchell’s Pro 221 blades to match the prototype since then.

Mizuno builder Kyle Hammond built up Mitchell’s first set of S-1s just in the last few weeks and he put them through their paces last week during a session at TPC Sawgrass.

“After about an hour, going through the bag, taking Trackman numbers, he loved them,” Freeman said. “It didn’t take long at all.”

Freeman said Mitchell likes to get his irons to around 100-200 RPMs above the club number (I.e. 7100-7200 for a 7-iron) when he’s hitting shots on the range, because he knows he won’t swing as hard on the course and end up seeing about 300-400 RPMs less.

“Going through the set, the spin numbers and the launch windows for him were dead on,” Freeman said. “My two goals going down there to get these in play were the sole had to perform, and the spin and launch had to be there. He loved the feel; that was not going to be a concern.”

“Keith was definitely instrumental in developing it and loves all those things, but throughout our testing, there were a bunch of other players who loved the same thing, so we’re hoping a lot more of these — whether contracted or non-contracted — in play.”

Mitchell shot 73-68 in the first two rounds and is inside the top 40 heading into the weekend.
