The third annual 8 am Invitational presented by Justin Timberlake at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas was full of good times and good drinks. Speaking of drinks, Dewar’s teamed up with GOLF to sponsor the par-3 12th hole. Each day there was a different component to keep celebrities eagerly coming back for more than just the drinks.  

Day 1: Any celebrity that hit the green would win a bottle of limited-edition Dewar’s Double Double 37 in a special casing. 

Day 2: Dewar’s made a $12,000 donation to Justin Timberlake Foundation, and would make another $12,000 donation to closest to the pin’s charity of choice.

The Dewar’s bar cart, which is as cool as it gets, was on hand with Dewar’s 12, a special edition Dewar’s 19 to commemorate its partnership with the USGA featuring a Pinehurst logo for this year’s U.S. Open on the packaging, and lemon wedges made to order. From the moment celebrities stepped up to the tee box, they locked their eyes on the Dewar’s cart before even peaking at the green. When Day 2 came around, the field was anticipating their visit to No. 12 to compete for closest to the pin and to get the first drink. 

These are five things that stuck with me from my time on the 12th tee box with Dewar’s:

1. A Lemon Wedge is a highly underrated drink

When I drink whisky, I typically have it neat. That’s just my preference. When it’s 90 degrees in the sun at the beautiful Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas, it makes you want to seek out something with a more summer feeling. Enter the Lemon Wedge.  

It’s a simple drink to make:

1 ½ oz. Dewar’s 12

2 oz. lemonade

3 oz. club soda

While that might not sound like much, it’s a perfect trifecta. A common sentiment shared by celebrities after having a sip was that while they might not be typical whisky drinkers, they are now Lemon Wedge drinkers.

2. Kathryn Newton was the event tempo queen

No one was kinder or had a sweeter swing on the 12th tee box than Newton. Her swing is as smooth as a Dewar’s 19 (I couldn’t resist). Without any hesitation, which is a breath of fresh air to watch considering the amount of slow play we see in today’s game, she walked up and effortlessly hit the center of the green to win a bottle of Dewar’s Double Double 37.

Newton quickly complimented her caddie’s efforts in helping her navigate the Wynn Golf Club all day and said she would be gifting him her bottle. His smile of gratitude said it all as to what that gift meant to him.

3. Justin Timberlake *almost* made an ace

JT, who hosts the event and is a partner in 8 am Golf, takes his game seriously. He wasn’t just trying to get it close to the pin – he was trying to ace the 12th hole. He was tracking well and nearly made the course erupt. Nonetheless, you could see the satisfaction on his face for sticking it tight on a tough pin placement in front of the crowd.

That was the best shot hit on Day 1. 

4. No one has more fun than Jimmy Fallon and Blake Griffin

Fallon and Griffin aren’t the best golfers in the field, but they are the best at having a good time. The energy changes when you’re in the presence of these two. They’re natural-born entertainers who know how to lighten up the mood. Once these guys start feeling loose with Dewar’s in their hands, the fun really starts.

Now that Griffin is retired, Fallon should start worrying about him entering the late-night game… 

5. Former athletes still have the competitive juices

While most athletes were retired and golf is a hobby for the entertainers in the field, you wouldn’t know it by how seriously they took the charitable challenge and closest to the pin contests. They wanted to win. Badly.

It’s that kind of drive for perfection that makes them so successful at what they do for a living, and their imperfection with the game makes them relatable to the everyday golfer.

Imagine a golf tournament that values vibe over score. And the golf hang over the golf grind.

Now add 20 golf-obsessed celebrities to the field and tell them their mission is to have a good time and raise awareness for the American Skin Association. The result is the 2022 8AM Golf Invitational hosted by JT and Wynn Las Vegas.

The “JT” stands for Justin Timberlake, an investor and partner in 8AM Golf, a holding company that owns GOLF.com and eight other golf brands. It’s also my place of work. Timberlake, a 10-time Grammy Award winner with a deep passion for golf, started working with 8AM in the spring of 2021. He leads creative initiatives across its portfolio of brands, and while he’s currently working on several projects with 8AM, this Invitational was the first to launch publicly.

Timberlake handpicked 19 friends to join him at Wynn Las Vegas from April 21-23 to compete in the 8AM Golf Invitational. Why Wynn? In addition to its elevated aesthetic, it operates the only golf course located right on the Strip, making it convenient for participants to walk from their rooms to the course to the tables. The friends who joined Timberlake included entertainers Jimmy Fallon, Kathryn Newton, Chace Crawford and ScHoolboy Q, and NFL standouts Patrick Mahomes, JJ Watt, TJ Watt, Travis Kelce and Zach Ertz. Pro golfers Michelle Wie, Mel Reid and Tim Clark joined other household-name athletes like Michael Phelps and CC Sabathia to round out the field. The participants ranged in handicap from plus-3 to 24.

Paired in teams of two, they enjoyed a friendly scramble format over two rounds of golf. Mahomes and Kelce, partners in the event and also teammates on the Kansas City Chiefs, took home the top prize after shooting a two-day total of 18 under par. They won by two shots over three teams who tied for second place — bromantic duo Timberlake and Fallon, actors Newton and Crawford and NHL players Jarret Stoll and Scott Hartnell.

There was an eight-way tie at the top when Mahomes and Kelce were standing on the 17th green. Fallon, who played with the winners on the final day, tried his best to ensure a playoff. Standing on the 17th green, he’d seen Kelce’s putts come up short all day and said, “Give me that,” while pointing to Kelce’s ball, fully intending to toss the ball into a nearby lake. Kelce instead gave Fallon his milled Scotty Cameron putter, and Fallon, who admitted after his round that his “brain didn’t turn off,” promptly threw the putter into the lake. Undaunted, Kelce putted on the final hole with his driver, and soon after hoisted a trophy alongside his partner.

The laid-back rounds were followed by upscale dinner experiences that had a “modern rat pack” dress code, a nod to Frank Sinatra’s rich history at Wynn Las Vegas, which Old Blue Eyes frequented when it was called The Desert Inn. The resort showed the celebrities what it does best when it hosted a poker tournament that included all 20 golfers plus 50 of the resort’s VIPs. Fallon grabbed the mic and emceed part of the tournament, Timberlake beat-boxed and also briefly emceed, and the competitors raised $600,000 for American Skin Association.

Camaraderie and charity were the cornerstones of the event, and they’re the qualities Timberlake most appreciates about golf. 

“It was a great time,” Mahomes said as he accepted his trophy. “Let’s run this back next year.”

One week following Hurricane Dorian’s disastrous trip through the Bahamas, Tiger Woods is teaming up with another high-wattage name to raise millions to help with the relief effort.

On Tuesday, Woods announced the creation of the ONE Bahamas Fund “in support of Hurricane Dorian relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts.” Woods teamed up with singer and actor Justin Timberlake, along with Nexus, RBC and the Albany, Bahamas, in the joint effort.

1) As a strong believer in philanthropy and teamwork, I’m excited to partner with my friends @jtimberlake, #NEXUSLuxuryCollection, @rbc and @albanybahamas to establish the ONE Bahamas Fund in support of Hurricane Dorian relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The partnership established the fund with a $6 million donation of its own, with the hope of doubling that number with additional donations from the public.

Ever wanted a bunker lesson with Rory McIlroy? Well, thanks to the European Tour’s Twitter account, we got a glimpse into what he’d say.

Rory, sporting an expensive new watch and playing a practice round at the Omega European Masters with Justin Timberlake, took a moment to give his playing partner a little bunker lesson crash course. His advice was simple and really helpful, so let’s break it down.

Step One: Line up the club shaft

The first thing Rory did is draw a line in the sand perpendicular to the target line, from the golf ball to his stance. Then, when he set up, he wanted to do two things:

-Set the clubface open, so the leading edge of the clubface sits alongside the line.
-Match the shaft with the line in the sand.

Step Two: Fold the elbow

Once he got set up, the next step was pretty simple: Rory just focuses on folding his right elbow into his body on the backswing.

Step Three: Straighten the elbow

And once he’s folded, Rory says that he wants to unfurl the elbow fast, creating the width that helps the club get shallow and sweep through the sand.

Justin Timberlake must have thought his birdie on the par-3 7th at Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course on Wednesday would be good enough to win the hole for his team — then came Will Mackenzie.

The singer was playing a practice-round match with Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose against two-time Tour winner Mackenzie and partner Brian Thompson. With horrendous weather pounding the Monterey Peninsula, conditions have made the course quite a challenge, even to the most seasoned pros. So Timberlake’s two should have been more than enough to win the hole.

But Mackenzie rose to the occasion: the 42-year-old made an ace to snatch the hole from Rose and Timberlake.
