Among elite golfers, swing speeds have never been faster. Distance off the tee has always been a weapon, but in the current age of golf, it’s absolutely paramount if you want to be among the game’s best.

How you can add some of that sweet sweet clubhead speed, though? There are a number of ways to go about it, but one easy method is by properly using ground reaction forces.

PGA Professional Bill Schmedes III has a great drill to help you use the ground more efficiently, and it involves the use of an alignment stick.

https://twitter.com/GOLF_com/status/1481797050689896448

Put the alignment stick on the ground and line up for a shot with you feet on top of the rod. Get into a golf posture and begin your takeaway. As you do this, straighten your trail leg and feel yourself put pressure on the inside heel of that side.

“This is what we see from the best players in the world,” Schmedes says.

As you transition into the downswing, you should shift that pressure from the inside heel of your trail leg to the toes on your lead side. Now you’ll extend your lead leg and push off the ground as you let the clubhead swing through impact.

“If we can go about using the ground more efficiently, you can not only get better at golf, but you can create more speed,” Schmedes says. “That’s going to be tremendous for your game.”

The setup is the foundation of a solid swing. If you don’t nail your fundamentals when you address the ball, you’re making it that much more difficult to put a solid strike on the ball.

The problem is lots of recreational golfers breeze past this reality. In their pursuit of towering irons and bombed drives, it’s easy to ignore simple fundamentals. But if you want to hit the shots of your dreams, you need to build from the ground up.

A huge key when working on your setup is balance. And on this edition of Home Practice, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Tony Ruggiero stresses the importance of a balanced setup.

“I don’t know that people pay near enough attention to balance when it comes to working on the golf swing,” Ruggiero says.

With the help of Dr. Scott Lynn, a PhD and biomechanist, Ruggiero uses ground reaction force plates to find the specifics of a balanced setup.

“If we’re trying to learn a motor task, it’s good to explore the edges,” Dr. Lynn says. “If we know where the edges are, then the middle is much easier to find.”

You can use this theory and apply it to your setup to discover a balanced address position. Set up to the ball and put all your weight on your toes. Take note of this feeling, and then put all your weight on your heels. Now that you know these two extremes, it will be easier to find a happy medium i.e. a balanced setup.

“That’s a really good pre-shot routine that you can do,” Dr. Lynn says. “Right before you hit, explore your toes, heels, find the middle, and then swing … That little pre-shot trigger could really help you get balanced.”

To borrow a quote from HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, “Winter is coming.” That means storing the clubs away and counting down the days until spring. But while you may not be able to get outside on the course to work on your game, there are still plenty of options for sharpening your swing from the comfort of your home. The best part of all? You don’t even need a club.

One easy home-practice drill is the Pivot Drill, which helps you get your turn and weight shift in sync and will help you hit powerful, solid shots.

This drill, which you can watch above, is brought to us by PGA Professional Michelle Winkler and GOLF Teacher to Watch Jackson Koert and is extremely simple to execute.

“This is one of my favorite exercises,” Koert says.

All you need for this drill is a medicine ball and a partner. Once you have those elements in place, line up in your golf posture holding the ball between your hands as if you were about to hit a shot. Next, make a backswing about halfway to the top and then begin to shift your weight forward to turn and throw the ball to your partner.

“The weight of the medicine ball is really going to encourage him to turn back and wind back,” Winkler says. “But, more importantly, he’s going to use me as an external cue and toss the ball to me to get a better pivot and follow through going through.”

This drill will teach your body the proper feel of a solid pivot and add strength to your core that will produce more power in your swing.
