So you want to flop it like Phil Mickelson? That’s rather unlikely, but hitting a serviceable sky-high pitch is actually easier than you’d think. In the video below, part of our Fix Finder instruction series, Brian Mogg explains the simple way to hit a flop shot.

While this type of chip is not for everyone and should be used sparingly, there are certain situations on the course that demand a lofted chip shot. If you’re stuck on the wrong side of a greenside bunker, for example, and the only path to the hole is through the air. Or maybe you’re off the edge of the putting surface but really close to the cup. In that case, you need to hit it high and land it soft to give yourself a short putt.

In our video, Mogg explains that the biggest mistake golfers make when attempting a flop is leaning back at contact. The thought is that they need to move backwards to get the ball in the air. But that’s not the case. To hit a successful flop, you shouldn’t be moving backwards or forwards at all. The key is to swing through nice and easy and trust the club and loft to do the work for you.

Watch the tip below to start hitting flop shots like the best of ’em.

Top 100 Teacher Tom Stickney says the key to gaining more power off the tee is getting out of your comfort zone, however disrupting that might feel. Specifically, you need to increase your swing speed by moving your arms faster through your swing.

Furthermore, you have to stop “exiting left” on your follow-through, which will kill any chance you have at bombing your drive. Instead, try to keep your right shoulder back and down in your backswing and transition (left shoulder for lefties), which will help you generate power from the inside. Once you get comfortable with that, you should start seeing your yardages increasing significantly.

Watch Stickney demonstrate the tip in the video below.

How high should you tee up your golf ball? It’s one of those common problems that every golfer wonders about, but it’s so straightforward that many of them are afraid to ask. Well, don’t worry, because GOLF Top 100 Teacher Kellie Stenzel is here to help.

Many golfers tend to tee the ball too high — especially with their iron. In reality, the ball should rest just above the grass when you’re selecting an iron. When you’re going with a fairway wood, peg it about half an inch, and if you’re going with the big stick, a tee height of about an inch and a half. Do that, and you’ll be well on your way to hitting great shots all through

Watch the video above to see all the necessary steps in action.

Golf is the type of game in which you can set yourself up for failure before you hit your first tee shot. That’s why a thorough but efficient warm-up routine is essential if you want to play your best. In this video, Top 100 Teacher Kellie Stenzel walks through the basics of how to warm up for the golf course in just five minutes.

While it may not be a “fix” in the traditional sense, performing a proper warm-up can prevent you from having to make a load of fixes during your round (or on the driving range afterward).

First, take out your wedge and hit a few half swings to get an initial feel. Once you’ve done that, hit two full shots with your wedge. Now that you’re comfortable with your highest-lofted club, it’s time to make you way through the bag. Start with your 9-iron, then hit a few shots with your 6-iron. After that, move on to a fairway wood or hybrid before finally hitting a few quality strikes with your driver.

Welcome to Fix of the Week, our weekly highlight of the best tips from our free Fix Finder instruction app. This week’s tip comes from Top 100 Teacher Joe Hallett.

Steal a feel from the pro Tours to put your best stroke on autopilot. Here’s how to do it.

1. LEVEL UP

When my Tour players are draining knee-knockers with confidence, they often tell me that they feel like mannequins. What they’re saying is that their setup and clubface are square, and their stroke is compact. To steal this feel, stand tall with your putter held across your chest as shown. Use the shaft to check that your shoulders are level — a key first step.

Always start with your stance level and in line with your intended target.

2. GET TILTED

Next, place the club against your back (grip behind your head) and slowly bend forward into your posture. Tilt from your tailbone until your eyes are right over the ball, keeping your back flat against the shaft—now’s not the time to fall out of alignment. You should feel your core engage here as you tilt. Allow your knees to flex, but keep your legs solid — not tense — and stable.

Tilt straight over from your tailbone, engaging your core and legs.

3. SET SQUARE

Bring the club back around and hold it straight out in front of you, making sure that the shaft and both forearms are in a straight line (tweak your right- and left-hand holds to get this right). Now lower your arms and putter down to the ball and square to your intended line. Lean slightly left or toward the hole just a touch.

Check that the shaft and your forearms are in a straight line with the club-face when it’s square to your target.

4. NEVER MISS

It’s time for your mannequin to come to life! Well, actually, just your arms and left shoulder as you swing them back and through squarely and gently along your intended line. There’s no movement at all from your legs, torso or head. Keep the length, style and speed of your stroke controlled and you’ll be —ahem — posed for greatness on the greens.

Think of your arms and left shoulder as the engines in your stroke.

In certain situations, they are irreplaceable. Hitting crisp shots with fairway woods consistently, on the other hand, often stumps the average golfer.

While most golfers can handle hitting fairway woods off a tee, they are lost when the ball is resting flat in the fairway. Staring at your ball in the short grass with a wood in hand can be intimidating.

Much of that is mental. It’s hard to visualize your beefy fairway wood head being able to sweep under the ball. Driver-sized fairway woods in the modern game only make this problem worse.

Fortunately, hitting consistent, flush fairway woods is not as hard as it seems.

Perhaps no fundamental is more important to your game than learning how to make a perfect golf grip.

Your hands are the only direct connection to the club. A good grip can set you up for success, but a bad grip can doom your swing before you’ve started. That means every swing thought and instruction tip in the book is useless if you aren’t holding the club right.

While there are a few different preferences for gripping your club, they are all essentially variations on the same foundation. The good news is it’s so easy that with the proper instruction anyone can do it.

Golfers of all abilities have no doubt heard the term “swinging on plane.” But what does that mean, and how do you do it?

Essentially, “plane” refers to the path of your clubhead during a swing. If the path ( plane) gets out of whack, the result is lots of slices and hooks.

Golfers and instructors talk endlessly about how to gain power and accuracy off the tee. Because of this, the simple things often get lost in the conversation, like how high you should tee up your golf ball.

It might be tempting to go deep on slice fixes and pure contact drills. But without an understanding of the fundamentals there is little hope you’ll shoot the scores you want to shoot.

Sometimes people don’t learn the basics because they are embarrassed to ask. That’s why we put together this video explaining the essentials about teeing up your golf ball. Different clubs require different teeing tactics — you don’t want to tee your ball to the same height with your driver and 3-wood.

Watch the video below and never question your tee height again.
