Camilo Villegas is a five-time PGA Tour winner. At 43 years old, he understands the grind of professional golf — the highs and lows — better than most. Two years ago, in Bermuda, Villegas, who is from Colombia, broke a nine-year winless drought at the Butterfield Championship and clinched a two-year exemption in the process.

But his two-year pass expired this year, and he landed back at Q-School needing a good four days to regain his fully-exempt status.

“I’ve been able to win in my 40s, which is pretty good,” Villegas said after the second round of Q-School. “But here we are. At the end of the day, whatever I did in the past doesn’t matter. It’s where we are right now.”

Villegas put himself in position to retain his card, but needed a stellar Sunday to finish inside the top five and stay on the top circuit. He eagled the first but double bogeyed the 9th to make the turn at even for the day and well off the pace required to earn his card back. But Villegas put the pedal down on the back nine, making four straight birdies from 14 through 17 to arrive at the 18th hole at Dye’s Valley needing a birdie to get into a playoff.

Villegas split the fairway and knocked his approach close but flubbed the birdie attempt to finish at 10 under, one shot out of the playoff between Dylan Wu and Ben Silverman for the fifth and final card given out at Q School.

While Villegas’ Sunday Q-School charge came up one shot short, he didn’t hang his head and stomp off into the Florida sunset.

Instead, he hung around to watch his friend and fellow countryman, Macelo Rozo, come home in three under to finish in a tie for second and secure a PGA Tour card for the first time in the 36-year-old’s career. After Rozo knocked in his par putt on the 18th hole, his emotions poured out. Rozo celebrated not only with his family but also with Villegas.

Rozo was aware of Villegas’ furious back-nine run and that his friend, with whom he stayed during the pressure-packed week, came up one shot short.

“I watched, I watched,” Rozo said on Sunday. “I think I hit a leaderboard by accident, and I saw his name. Yes, 13. I saw ‘Villegas.’ I was like, I know that guy. He wasn’t going to go down without fighting. He’s feisty, he’s really good, and I think a day like today would favor his game. He’s really good in the wind, as we all know. He made a run. Obviously, I’m sad that he didn’t get all the way to the playoffs to earn a card again, but I’m sure he’s proud of the way he fought.”

With both of their jobs hanging in the balance, Rozo said he and Villegas kept things “light” on Saturday night, and then the five-time PGA Tour winner offered some words of encouragement on Sunday morning as Rozo prepared to chase his dream.

“He came down and just told me, ‘Hey, you’re going to feel it’s going to get away from you at some point. For sure it’s going to happen. Just know that you’ve just got to keep fighting until the end, hitting one shot at a time,'” Rozo said. “He told me, like, look at myself yesterday, I was, I think, four over through nine. He brought it back to even, but he was like, he told me just keep your head in it. It’s going to get tough, but you’re up for the challenge.”

Rozo said that after Villegas and his caddie left the house Sunday morning, Rozo called his mental coach and then cried as the magnitude of the 18 holes ahead of him set in. But he said he embraced the emotions. He held onto them and prepared to finally achieve his dream.

“I told myself, and I even wrote some stuff like with the steam on the shower this morning,” Rozo said. “Like ‘PGA Tour member ’26,’ I wrote that. Those little moments that obviously I haven’t shared with anybody.”

Eighteen holes later, Rozo’s lifelong quest to become a PGA Tour member was complete, and Villegas, even though he came one shot short of joining him, was there to share in a moment that meant more than words could say.

PGA Tour veteran Camilo Villegas’ difficult season didn’t get better at last week’s 2025 World Wide Technology Championship. It got worse. The five-time Tour winner quietly withdrew from Friday’s second round, but not before reaching double-digits over par.

The primary culprit? El Cardonal’s par-4 4th hole, which Villegas played in 11 over in the first two rounds.

Early in his career, Villegas was one of the top players in the game. He won three times from 2008-2010, and then again at the 2014 Wyndham Championship.

In his two-win 2008 season, he finished T9 at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines (won by Tiger Woods) and T4 at the PGA Championship.

The next several years saw Villegas stumble down the world ranking amid on-course struggles and personal tragedy. But he eventually fought he his way back to the winner’s circle, ending a nine-year victory drought at the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Unfortunately, this year has been a struggle for the popular pro. He managed only one top-10 finish, falling to 164th in the FedEx Cup standings. He’s ranked 166th in the FedEx Fall list.

Villegas WD’d after a poor opening round in his last start, the Bank of Utah Championship, but he was actually showing promising signs at the World Wide Technology Championship.

Though he opened the first round with a double bogey at the 10th and added another at 17, he also made two birdies and eagled the par-3 3rd hole to move back to even par.

But when Villegas reached the 4th hole on Thursday, disaster struck. The long par-4 runs uphill and is surrounded by sandy native areas. It appears that the native areas are where Villegas ran into trouble.

According to the play-by-play on PGATour.com, Villegas hit his tee shot on 4 into a native area. He then took his second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth shots from the native area, before getting back into the fairway.

After reaching the green with his seventh shot, Villegas two-putted for a quintuple-bogey 9. Just like that, his score-to-par dropped to five over. Two additional bogeys followed at 6 and 7 to complete a seven-over 79.

With players going low and the cut projected at five under par, Villegas needed a heroic round on Friday to play the weekend. Starting on the back nine on Friday, he quickly made birdies at 1 and 2 to improve to three over for the tournament.

After a par at 3, Villegas arrived back at the scene of his swoon in Round 1. But Villegas’ second attempt at the 4th hole went even worse than the 1st.

He lost his first drive and was forced to take a penalty and re-tee. According to the play-by-play, shots four through eight were “from fairway.” It appears that his eighth shot finally reached the green, where he two-putted for a sextuple-bogey 10.

After making par at the 5th, Villegas withdrew from the tournament. The Tour announced his WD but did not provide a reason.

At the point of his withdrawal, Villegas was four over on his second round and 11 over for the tournament, the same amount of strokes to par he lost on the 4th hole alone. That means he played the rest of the holes at even par.

Following his first-round 65, which put him one shot behind early leader Sahith Theegala, Villegas met with reporters to discuss his impressive day on the course.

But a question about his play on the Plantation Course’s 15th reminded the Columbian pro about a rules incident that occurred over a decade ago on the very same hole and resulted in a disqualification… on his birthday.

“I was talking with Collin Morikawa in the locker room yesterday, actually. I said, Hey, last time I was here it was my birthday and I got DQ’d. And he goes, ‘Really? What happened?’ And then I told him just kind of a little funky rule there and it happened,” Villegas shared on Thursday. “I went to bed that night, I remember perfectly, and woke up in the morning, go to get a little warm up, [former Golf Channel reporter] Kelly Tilghman is there in the gym and she says, ‘I think he’s getting DQ’d’. And I’m like, Really? What’s going to happen?”

The “little funky rule” Villegas referred to happened at the 2011 Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. On the 15th hole, Villegas twice failed to chip up a slope leading the green, each time watching his ball roll back to his feet. But, according to an ESPN.com report from the time, while the ball was still rolling after his second attempt, Villegas swiped away some debris in the path of the ball.

In doing so, he had unknowingly violated Rule 23-1, which states, “When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed.”

A viewer watching on TV, however, did know the rule, and called into PGA Tour rules officials to report the violation. Unfortunately Villegas wasn’t aware of his penalty until the next morning. Having already signed an incorrect scorecard, he was summarily disqualified.

The nature of the DQ even forced then-PGA Tour rules official Slugger White to declare, “It makes me sick.”

But it wasn’t all bad news for Villegas. Given the unfortunate fact that the rules flap coincided with his birthday, the Tour did give him something to soften the blow: a cake.

“Anyway, they did have a nice little cake for me after I got DQ’d,” Villegas related on Thursday, “so I came to grab a bite and then pack everything for next week.”

Back in 2011, a younger Villegas already had three PGA Tour victories to his name, and he would add a fourth at the 2014 Wyndham Championship. It would be nearly a decade before he entered the winner’s circle again.

Following years of on-course struggles and personal tragedy, Villegas mounted the summit again last November when he captured his fifth Tour win at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. That win earned him a spot in this week’s event, which he has quickly taken advantage of. It also locked up his status on Tour for 2024 and beyond.

We’ll start with the good. There was so much of it, after all. 

Nine birdies on Thursday. An eight-under 65 on the Plantation Course at Kapalua. A share of the lead when he finished his opening round at the Sentry, the PGA Tour’s season-opening event. Camilo Villegas’ day was as flawless as the weather in Maui. 

Actually, most everything has been pretty wonderful of late for the 41-year-old Colombian. He’s playing in this week’s kickoff, reserved for various high finishers from a year ago, after a win in November at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, his first victory in nine years. And to the victor has gone the vibes.

“It’s a great feeling,” Villegas said. “It’s great to be here. It’s been a great offseason. It’s been time to reflect a little bit on everything that has happened in the career in a good way, in a positive way. The energy has been unbelievable. It’s nice to see the people care about you, people respect you, people are pulling for you, and nice to keep this thing going. 

“I really enjoy what I do. I said it in Bermuda: Sometimes you kind of fear kind of losing your job and not being able to do what we do, because I like to compete. It’s nice to be here, nice to be back with the big boys, and nice to get to a good start today.”

All good. 

Which makes what went down on the 14th tee all the more striking. 

That was bad, Villegas said. 

“Really bad,” he added.

Ahead of it, Villegas had birdied 8. And 10. And 11. And 12. And 13. He’d moved into a share of the lead. On the 290-yard, par-4 14th, Villegas talked with his caddie ahead of his tee shot on the risk-reward hole. He went with a 3-wood. He hit. 

His ball went left. 

It was low. 

It finished somewhere in the bushes. The PGA Tour Live broadcast initially flashed that his ball carried 141 yards, then later listed it at 228 yards. 

Back on the tee, Villegas raised both of his arms forward in frustration and quickly dropped them. He murmured.   

“Oh no,” an announcer said on the PGA Tour Live broadcast. 

“Oh my gosh,” another announcer said.  

“… That was just a dead smother.”

“That’s in that deep stuff,” another announcer said. 

From there, Villegas dropped. Up ahead were playing partners Brian Harman, whose 265-yard tee shot was short of the green, and Eric Cole, whose 276-yard tee shot was in the left greenside bunker. 

“The yardage books have a million sprinklers in it,” an announcer said on the PGA Tour Live broadcast of Villegas’ ball. “I don’t know if there’s one over there. He is way down to the left.”

He eventually bogeyed. Shot three was a pitch that hit the green’s false front and trickled back to the fairway. Shot four was a pitch to 4 feet. Shot five was a putt. 

Then Villegas was good again. 

He birdied 15. He birdied 16. He birdied 18.

All week long, Camilo Villegas played fast. But on 18 Sunday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, he finally took a breath.

He lagged his birdie putt on the finishing hole at Port Royal Golf Course to just a foot below the cup and when he realized what it meant, Villegas closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

It was a sigh of relief.

He tapped in the final putt for a six-under 65 to win the Bermuda Championship by two and looked to the sky. Time was standing still. This win meant a whole lot more.

This win was for Mia.

“Tough to put into words right now,” Villegas told Golf Channel. “I love this game. This game has given me so many great things, but in the process, it kicks your butt. Life has given me so many great things, but in the process, it kicks my butt too.”

The win is the first in nine years for the 41-year-old Colombian, however, that time passed far slower for Villegas.

The first two of his now five PGA Tour wins came in back-to-back weeks at the end of the 2008 season when he won both the BMW Championship and Tour Championship. He reached a career-best 7th in the Official World Golf Ranking and even added a follow-up win at the 2010 Honda Classic.

Then his game fell on harder times. He logged a fourth win at the 2014 Wyndham, but between 2012 and 2018, he missed 62 out of 170 cuts on the PGA Tour and then had major shoulder surgery that sidelined him from golf until 2020.

But none of that compared to what happened in his personal life.

While at the Honda Classic in 2020, Villegas, who lives in Florida but was playing a season on the Korn Ferry Tour, noticed something was wrong with Mia. He and his wife Maria took Mia to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami for scans to see why the 18-month-old was crying more at night and even when she was playing.

A team of doctors told them the news no parents ever want to hear: Mia had cancerous tumors on her brain and spine.

They started treatment, but by July, at just 22 months old, Mia was gone.

However, Villegas didn’t quit, after Mia’s passing. He made several starts on the Korn Ferry Tour in the remainder of 2020 and then returned to the PGA Tour in 2021 on a major medical extension.

After two disappointing seasons, he was relegated to the Korn Ferry Tour for this season. He managed to get in 11 PGA Tour events this season before this week, but until last week’s World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, he made just three cuts, failing to place better than a tie for 48th in either.

But then in Cabo, the old Villegas returned. The swagger, the stingers, the shot-making. Had Erik van Royen not made his 25-footer for eagle on the last at El Cardonal to slam the door shut, Villegas would have had an eagle try of his own to force a playoff.

It was his best finish on the PGA Tour since 2016 and he arrived in Bermuda with more of the same.

After three rounds, he was one back of Alex Noren at 18 under. Then he took the lead early in the final round with four birdies in five holes. He coasted through the middle of the round as Noren and other chasers failed to stay at 22 under.

But on 15, Villegas stepped up. With Noren knocking his approach within five feet at the par 4, Villegas dropped his second inside the Swede to stay a shot ahead. On 17, he put the tournament on ice when he got up and down from the short-sided bunker for birdie on the par 5 as Noren could only muster a par.

“I never felt so comfortable being in contention like I did the last couple weeks, to be honest,” Villegas said. “It’s kind of weird, it’s kind of strange. Even when I was in contention back in the day, yeah, a few years ago, 10 or more, I didn’t have this calmness. I’ve got to really analyze what happened the last couple weeks, try to replicate more often.

Now, after finishing the regular season outside the top 200 in the FedEx Cup and playing much of the season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Villegas’s PGA Tour card is secure for the next two seasons. Before last week, he was set to fly out Monday for the second stage of Q-School. Now he doesn’t need to compete for his card at all.

That’s sure to be popular in the golf world as he has always been a fan favorite, stemming from his signature “Spider-Man” pose to read putts. That support never waivered over the years.

“The support has been unbelievable,” Villegas said. “I must have got 500 text messages [last week]. I didn’t even win the golf tournament. I felt the energy, it kept building up.

After Villegas holed out on 18, his friends rushed to shower him in champagne. He put his arms out and let it happen.

Maria and their almost two-year-old son Mateo weren’t there, but Villegas said he knew Mateo was jumping up and down with excitement watching from home. He wasn’t the only one.

“I got my little one up there,” he said, again looking to the sky, “watching it, smiling. She’s where she needs to be after a long fight.”

After a long fight of his own, Villegas is where he needs to be too.

The game of golf has treated Camilo Villegas quite well recently — but that hadn’t been the case for a long time, unfortunately.

After placing T-2 at last week’s World Wide Technology Championship with an impressive 25-under, Villegas has carried over that high level of play to this week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, where, once again, he finds himself in contention. (As of press time, he’s T-2 at 18-under, just one stroke off the lead).

While things have been clicking for the 41-year-old over the past couple tournaments, his 2nd place finish last week was his best final result since November of 2016 — so it’s been a long time coming for Villegas to regain his form.

To his credit, he hasn’t made excuses, and, instead, actually addressed something that every golfer can relate with: Fear in golf.

When asked about his performance last week, Villegas got candid about having fear during competition — especially as the pressure mounts when your name is close to the top of the leaderboard.

“I thought I was going to be at the worst scared, to be honest, because it gets a little scary up there,” he said. “But I felt really comfortable, I enjoyed every second, and I guess we put ourself in a little position here for the weekend; so hopefully we can keep the good vibes.”

In response to a specific question about it being “scary” being in contention last week, Villegas expanded further, saying it’s important to channel fear in golf as much as possible.

“Let me be honest, let’s tell the viewer out there; people think that we just kind of chill out here and we’re very comfortable doing what we’re doing, but there’s a lot of demons out here and when you’ve been doing it for a long time, he said.

“Golf is hard. Everybody feels fear at some point playing golf, playing competitive golf, playing against the best players in the world. It’s about looking forward to feeling that not fear, kind of reshaping that fear into something a little bit, just lowering the curve and just managing it. To be honest, there was none of that last week, which I was surprised, so let’s keep it going.”

As mentioned above, hearing Villegas open up about having fear in golf is refreshing. Pro players make the game look so easy, but they still battle internal demons like every weekend warrior does; and it’s important to recognize that.

While the results haven’t necessarily been there for Villegas, trusting the process is apparent.

“It hasn’t been a great year, to be honest from a performance point of view,” Villegas said. “It’s been a great year from a kind of, kind of reshaping, retooling, overhauling, whatever you want to call it.”

The road back towards contention has been a long one for Villegas, who said that his coach, Jose Campra, told him when they began working together in February that the duo needed a year before seeing real results.

“[Campra] was very honest with me,” adds Villegas. “He said, ‘I need a year.’ I was like, ‘wow, man, I’ve got to play’. He said, ‘I don’t care what kind of status you have at the end of the year, we’re going to grind and, hopefully, golf becomes a little bit easier than it’s been the last few years.”

“Yeah, it’s been a grind,” Villegas openly admitted.

With the hard work starting to pay off, it’s inspired a newfound confidence for Villegas. But he knows there’s still a long way to go before finishing off his comeback with a victory this weekend.

“We’re only halfway there, but we’ll keep playing.”

Camilo Villegas quickly interrupted Subpar hosts Drew Stoltz and Colt Knost. They wanted to move on to the next segment, but Villegas wasn’t ready.

“Hey, hey, hey, wait,” he said. “I gotta tell you the Tiger story. I’ve listened to your podcast here and there, and there’s always someone telling Tiger stories. But I got a good one.”

Who doesn’t love Tiger stories? Exactly.

Villegas’ starts in 2008. He was represented by IMG then, and they asked if he wanted to play in a skins game in Thailand later that year. He wanted to, but logistically it was tough. He was in an event the week before and also the week after in Australia. They had an idea, how about he gets a ride with Woods to Perth to play in Australia?

“If that’s the case,” he said, “I’m playing the skins game.”

Fast forward to that night, and after a long day on the course Villegas is on Woods’ private jet with Woods, Woods’ caddie Stevie Williams and his agent, Mark Steinberg.

“We get on the plane and I’m tired man. All I want to do is sleep,” Villegas said. “And this lady comes out and says, ‘Hey guys, what do you want to drink?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, I’ll take a water,’ and Tiger looks at me and gives me this look like, Dude, you just won the skins game, come on. Don’t be a wuss. Have a little freaking wine or whatever with me. So sure enough I said, ‘OK, bring me a glass or red wine,’ and they bring me this big glass of red wine.”

They get back to chatting, but when the plane is about to take off, Villegas remembers to hold his glass of water he ordered. He forgot about his glass of wine, though, which was sent shattering to the floor.

“I look to my right and there is red wine flying everywhere,” he says. “Tiger is to my left, he looks and goes, ‘Nice.’ I start sweating dude. I’m sweating here. I’m sweating.”

After the plane leveled in the air, a staffer came out to clean the wine, but Villegas refused and did it himself.

“I’m on the floor for about 40 minutes trying to get this out,” he says. “It’s the side panel, it’s the chair, it’s the carpet. This is not coming out. Finally I turn around and look at Tiger. I say, ‘Bro, just send this thing to get cleaned and send me the bill.'”

A month goes by and Villegas hears nothing about the plane. He sees Steinberg at an event and asks about the cleaning. He didn’t say much. He sees him again a couple of months later and asks again. Turns out it’s not coming out.

A few months later Villegas is at Woods’ event at Sherwood Country Club, and when he opens his locker he sees an envelope hanging.

“From TW to Camilo Villegas with attention to my financial guy, blah blah blah,” Villegas says. “Invoice for cleaning of the plane.”

The damage? A cool $25,000. But the story doesn’t end there.

Villegas at first wondered if they were messing with him, but he decided to pay up anyway, like he said he would. He saw Woods for the first time early the next day while heading to the gym.

“Hey, I got that invoice in the locker and I’m having some problems,” Villegas told Woods. “I called this lady at your bank, and I said, ‘Listen, I need to transfer $25,000 to this bank account.’ And the lady goes, ‘Sorry, Camilo, that bank account is full. You can’t fit a penny in there.’ And I just see Tiger’s face, and to this day I don’t know if he thought it was funny, and two, that was the last time I was on that plane.”
