Just one week out from the Players Championship, TPC Sawgrass is looking decidedly…frosty. An early March chill swept through northern Florida this week, sending players for their sweaters as temperatures dropped into the (gasp!) 40s at this week’s Tour stop in Orlando.
Up the road at next week’s tournament venue in Ponte Vedra Beach, things were even colder. Mitch Gregson posted a photo to Instagram showing off the frosted tips of the TPC Sawgrass practice area. It served as a reminder that this year’s event is likely to see cooler conditions after the schedule change pushed it to March for the first time since 2006.
Good news for tournament organizers, however: warmer weather is in the forecast for next week. Temperatures at TPC Sawgrass are expected to climb into the 70s next Thursday and Friday. Come the weekend, however, things get a bit sketchier: Lows around 50 plus a significant chance of thunderstorms.
The idea of watching pros play No. 17 into a cold, brutish wind has some fans salivating over the potential carnage at the island green. But those thunderstorms? They could take some of the joy out of one of the year’s biggest events.
