WATCH: Tony Finau’s wildly lucky bounce helps U.S. salvage early point

September 28, 2018

The Friday morning session was a very good one for the U.S. team, and the first match of the day was the pinnacle of it all.

Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka’s opening match against Justin Rose and Jon Rahm looked solidly blue all day. The American pair never led — until the final hole, that is, when they closed out the match 1 up.

It all could’ve gone so differently. On the 16th hole, with the U.S. team trailing by one, Finau’s tee shot on the par 3 looked destined for the water. And it almost was — right until the point his ball hit the wood paneling and bounced onto the green, settling just a few feet from the hole.

Finau made birdie, and a few holes later, the victory was secured.

“We’ll take the breaks where we can get them,” Finau said afterwards with a smile.
