3 things to know after Round 3 at the Farmers Insurance Open

January 27, 2019

The third round at the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open is in the books, and Justin Rose has a commanding lead. Can the top-ranked player in the world close it out on Sunday? We’ll see. Here are a few key moments from Saturday.

Is it over? Not quite

Rose missed three of his first four fairways and double-bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole. But from there, he almost put away the tournament, especially when he rolled in this putt for eagle at the ninth.

He almost put it away. Rose took a four-shot lead to the par-5 18th. Eyeing a birdie and a five-shot edge (turn out the lights!), Rose hit a surprisingly poor second shot that splashed into the greenside pond. After taking a drop, his approach shot flew over the hole, and he two-putted for bogey. His lead is exactly what it was to start the day: three shots. At 18 under, he tied the 54-hole scoring record and is clearly the man to beat. But don’t stamp his name on the cardboard check just yet.

Pin to win

Torrey Pines is Adam Scott’s season debut, and it’s also the first time he’s played this event. It could turn into a career revival. He shot a blistering front-nine 30 to vault into second place before closing his round of 65 with a birdie on the final hole. Taking a page from the Bryson DeChambeau playbook, Scott, who used to anchor his broomstick putter before the stroke was banned at the start of ’16, has putted with pin in this week and it’s paying dividends. He’ll play with Rose in Sunday’s final group.

Spieth and Reed make up

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed’s relationship has had a few twists, but it seems the young stars are ready to move forward. They played together in Saturday’s third round, greeted each other warmly on the opening tee, and praised each other afterward. Looks like both players are ready to put the controversy following last year’s Ryder Cup behind them.
