SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — This will sound ridiculous. After spending nearly a week in the Paris suburbs, during which I’ve bunked in a 15th-century house with a balcony in my bedroom that looks out upon the French countryside (thank you, Airbnb!), gorged myself on cheese and wine and attended the greatest event in golf, perhaps the coolest thing I’ve seen all week is a porte-gobelets, a beer-cup carrier.

The contraption first caught my eye on Day 1 of the Ryder Cup as I was strolling through the West Village hospitality area by the 17th hole here at Le Golf National. There, coming toward me under glorious blue skies, was a satisfied-looking fan toting a quartet of cold beers dangling from a disposable suds suitcase. Two handles. Four holes. One ingenius idea.
France has brought so much good to the world: Voltaire, hot-air balloons, pasteurization, Etch A Sketch. But this device may trump them all. Cheers to you, beer-cup carrier.
